Sure, make me take the heat from the bush-bots...

Seriously, the misguided folks on this forum that think any country can survive by manipulation symbols need to try a little exercise.

For an entire day, write down everything you touch or use to survive. Start with the pencil and paper and go on from there. Note where each object is made.

At the end of the day, write a 200 word essay describing how you can get along with all those physical objects, because very soon, you're going to have to.

OPEN ASSIGNMENT
MISSION TO SAVE AMERICAN JOBS
August 25, 2003

President Bush:

Mr. President your mission, should you decide to accept it, is to recover the 3+ million jobs lost on your watch. You are to find where they went, recover them, and prevent this from happening again.

You have until November 2004 to complete this mission.

If you choose not to accept this mission, or are incapable of performing, don't run in the GOP Primary so another Republican can accept this important mission for America.

American Citizen Voter

PS Ronald Reagan was the last Republican to understand. Ross Perot sent a warning to your Dad but since then all we hear is the mantra, 'Perot gave us Clinton'. Actually your Dad gave us Perot.

Everyone acts like the president can wave the magic wand and make this stop. In a lot of ways it reminds me in the 80's when everyone was scared "robots and "computers" were going to elimanate ones job.

These same people who are worried about outsourcing are the same people who probably are big fans of the Internet. Our Internet/Web Site could do the work that it would have taken 2 people to do 5 years ago.

Does that make me a "free trader?"

This isn't 200 words, but...I get along with all of them just fine.

Wrong. I've already got them.

I'm concerned about jobs going overseas or to Indian engineers.

My husband's company is closing their Silicon Valley office. My husband doesn't know if he'll have an offer to go to another office or not.

If he doesn't get another offer, we don't know what we'll do. He's made great salary here, and we've barely managed on it. The cost of living in Silicon Valley.

Most of the software jobs are going to Indians on H1-B visas. So that leaves the American software engineers without a job, unless they take a substantial paycut.

I've been lucky to be a stay-at-home mom, but I'm worried that I may have to go back to work. However, I'm also a software engineer, and I don't know who would hire a software engineer that hasn't worked in almost 10 years.

I bet that all those men who have died keeping America free and making it a secure place for business to prosper slumber peacefully tonight knowing that American CEO's can hire non-citizens in order to make it their companies look profitable that quarter and therefore get a big fat bonus.

I know the argument about not being my brother's keeper.

Sometimes you have to think about what is good for America in the long run instead of what is good for you right now.

What if American soldiers get a better offer from another country? Hey, it's free trade.

If I may return to the article, Bush won't lose North Carolina. But offshoring has been a disaster for small towns across the south...Kannapolis is just the latest victim. The jobs are not coming back. I shudder to think what K-town will look like in 5 years. Also you have to think this changes the outlook for Rep Hayes and Blinky's senate seat.
