Seattle logs record string of 70+ degree days

SEATTLE - Seattle tied a record Monday for 49 straight days of temperatures of 70 degrees or higher.

Meteorologist Jeff Rood with the National Weather Service says it's "iffy" whether the record will broken. The forecast high for Tuesday is only 71 degrees and a few clouds over Sea-Tac Airport could make all the difference.

But if the string holds, the forecast is for warmer weather so those 70s days could run into September.

The old record was set in 1958 in roughly the same time period - from July 9 to Aug. 26.

Rood says Seattle temperatures have been a couple of degrees above normal this summer, but it's not that far out of the normal variation. He notes some parts of the country have been much hotter.

It's also been dry in Seattle. Precipitation at Sea-Tac since June first has totaled less than an inch - 0.89.

The driest June through August was 0.84 in 1987. Records at the airport go back to 1945. Taking a look at record from the Federal Building in downtown Seattle, which started in 1891, the driest June through August was 0.65 in 1919.

I was at an "out to lunch" concert today (wells fargo building at 2nd and madison) and I noticed this kinda big guy in a baseball cap. I noticed his shirt said "bread not bombs." Then I noticed BEHIND the shirt he had two very large BREASTS. Then I looked at the musicians and around at the "close seats" crowd and I realized it was a "dyke fest."

When she said the title of her next song was "Go away George Bush," I voted with my feet, which caused a smart remark from the band leader.

Too darned bad. And I took pleasure in being able to display ACTION with the feelings I know I shared with others there. It really would have been nice if some of them had done the same, though.

Well, now, I love oysters, mussels and escargot.

The first time I tried escargot, they escarwent and were escargone in short order.

I first tried raw oysters in 1984 when I lunched with a co-worker who was an old Navy salt (CPO). He said, "Dip it in sauce, chew three times and swallow." It was wonderful. And when I tried one without the sauce, it was like tasting the ocean.

Being of Italian ancestry I've been familiar with mussels since I was a kid. Pasta with mussels is a real treat.

Not the Smith Tower. The Smith Tower is down on First Avenue near Pioneer Square. The Seattle Tower is on Third across from the big Washington Mutual building. It used to be called the Northern Life Tower, and the family who owned the railroad and lived in Spokane kept a penthouse with a fireplace in it. They would ride the train over and spend the week before Christmas in Seattle every year. The train runs under the Seattle Tower.

Um. Well, I don't claim to be a native, but I do use an umbrella to shield my camera from the rain (and can't remember any other use for decades). I think every picture from this Support Our Troops Rally was (awkwardly) shot from beneath an umbrella. May I receive special dispenation for the clarity of the photos?
