"I can be as feminine as I want, but that doesn't take away from me contributing on the field," she told the newspaper.

Hnida, 22, dressed but never got into a game during two seasons as a walk-on....

What contributions, she never played?

Oh, wait...

Hnida became the first woman to compete in a Division I-A football game when she attempted an extra point last Dec. 25 in the Lobos' 27-13 loss to UCLA in the Las Vegas Bowl. The kick was blocked.

Hnida told the newspaper she was "called names that are not repeatable" many times during the 1999 season -- her final one at Colorado.

Cussing in a football locker room? Meanness in competition in the most violent sport we play? Why I never heard of such a thing...

She does a terrible disservice to all the truly gifted female athletes out there. All she is doing is reinforcing several stereotypes.

He said Hnida might be sent into a game this season "if the right time appears," but said, "we're not going to manufacture anything."
Huh?? Isn't waiting for the right time (where it won't hurt score-wise) to use a kicker you don't really need manufacturing?

"Because I'm a pretty feminine gal, and they didn't respect that about me."

You force your way onto a men's team, then complain that no one respects you?

Everyone on a football team will be subject to dirty talk, razzing and hazing.

Why is she complaining about the treatment that everyone else gets?

Think New Mexico will let her kick in a game? Probably not.

She's 0 for 1 in the kicking department, one coach says she wasn't a very good kicker and another has to find just the right moment for her to play.

Can someone tell me why she's taking up room on the roster?

Girls should not play football with guys.

Let them start their own leagues.

"To this day, if a football flies by my head, sometimes I just (flinch)."

Well, wouldn't most college and professional football players say the same thing? Oh, they wouldn't? And they wouldn't cry Boo Hoo when someone calls them names? Hmmmm. Maybe she just doesn't have what it takes. Take up pottery, sweetie.

I'll have to see the Sports Illustrated swimsuit edition before I can make any real judgement about her strengths and weaknesses..

Another reason to get rid of kickers in football. You've got these warriors going to war for 59 minutes, only to have the game decided by some pip squeak foreigner coming on the field saying "I'm going to keeck a touchdown."

Last year New Mexico placekicker Katie Hnida was the first woman to play in a Division I NCAA football game. She trotted out for the extra point in the Las Vegas Bowl. Being that it's the Las Vegas Bowl, the odds of making an extra point are pretty high. Katie managed to kick the ball about a foot in the air and have it blocked by her center's ass. She promptly walked over to the sideline and sobbed. Then the grief counselors took over. I just thank God the ball didn't bounce back to her in a Garo Yepremian replay. Can you imagine?

Welcome to football little lady. I can't count how many times I was called names when I played sports. And that was by my best friends.

Football 101 dictates that coaches will sometimes berate a player for inexcusable performance and that hazing does occur between teammates.....all designed to build mental toughness and team camaraderie. With her obvious thin-skinned approach to these issues she failed miserably at both.

"I was treated much more like a piece of meat there," she said in a story in The Albuquerque Tribune on Friday.

Leaving her sex aside for the moment, I'd like to tell Ms. Hnida that walk-on's are generally treated "like a piece of meat" in Division I-A. If they didn't think enough of your talents to offer you a scholarship, then you're just there to act like a living tackling dummy for the stud players. Period, end of sentence. Grow up.
