My grandmother is a very intense person. She was doped up enough during that time that she has only the most vague recollections of it, and there was no reason to risk her ire (she'd have gotten mad on general principle). So we didn't tell her. We told her she was really on the brink and needed breathing assistance "for a bit", but never got into details. And we never will.
