Project Gutenburg: A Website to download free books

I just came across a great website that I wanted to point out to Freepers. It is called Project Gutenburg, and it offers books free to download. Since they can only do this with books whose copywrites have expired, most books date from prior to 1923. However, there seems to be many great finds ready to be read.
Here is a link to a zipped text file of all the titles, and here is one for the authors. The website also has an alphabetical listing along with a search function.
I like anything that is free, so if you are like me, give it a look.

Nifty.
Although I can understand why they are in plain text format...it sure would be nice to be able to get them in an e-book format.
Thanks for the link.

However, there seems to be many great finds ready to be read.
I'm a longstanding Project Gutenberg addict - got hooked on G.K. Chesterton through their site. There's also
The Online Books Page, which is a bit easier to browse and has more books. Project Gutenberg classics, nutty self-published stuff, and pretty much anything that's public domain. Oh, and free science fiction at
The Baen Free Library.
Can you tell I do a lot of reading on the net? :-)

Project Gutenberg is great. I've read a few books from there, the most recent being Hound of the Baskervilles. By the way you guys might want to give yBook a try (it's free). It displays plain text as though you were reading it out of a paperback book. Here's the link:
http://members.iinet.net.au/~simonh/spacejock/yBook.html Also there is a front-end for PG called e-Library, which lets you search for and download books located on the PG server.
http://download.com.com/3000-2125-6226591.html?tag=lst-0-1 A couple things though. When sorting the Book List by author its sorts by first name instead of last. Plus searches are case sensitive. So when typing in an author's name make sure to capitalize the first letter. Same with titles.

I've been using the site for a long time to download reading material for my Palm. It's amazing how much reading I have done waiting for drs, dentists, rides, etc.
I've used it to read whle waiting in grocery checkout lines, too. Much better than tabloid reading as you wait.

Thanks.

Sam, I just went to the
link Humbug listed. It is a small program you download and run that converts any text or html file into ebook format. It really works well and only took a few minutes to set up. In addition, you can customize it all you want.
Give it a try.
