Voters Don't Want Bush Re-Elected - Poll
Voice of America ^ | 8/24/03

Posted on 08/24/2003 6:07:43 AM PDT by truthandlife

The majority of American voters would not like to see President Bush re-elected to another term according to a poll by Newsweek magazine.

The survey released Saturday showed that 49 percent of registered voters would not back the president for a second term if the vote were held now. Forty-four percent would support Mr. Bush's re-election.

The poll marked the first time in a Newsweek survey that supporters of Mr. Bush were out-numbered by those who would not like to see him back remain in office. In April, 52 percent of voters backed the president for a second term, while 38 percent did not.

The Newsweek report attributed the decline in the president's popularity to public disenchantment over the Iraq war. The poll found 69 percent of respondents said they were concerned that the United States will be bogged down for many years in Iraq without achieving its goals there.

Nearly half of those polled said they were concerned that the cost of the war will lead to a large budget deficit and seriously impact the U.S. economy. And more than half said they thought the estimated $1 billion per week the United States is paying for the war effort is too much and should be scaled back.

However, 61 percent still believe the United States was right to take military action against Iraq in March.

Only 18 percent of those polled believe a stable, democratic government can be set up in Iraq in the long term. And only 13 percent of respondents said U.S. efforts to establish security in Iraq and rebuild the country have gone well since May 1, when combat officially ended.

The Newsweek poll results are based on telephone interviews with more than one thousand adults aged 18 and older. It was conducted on August 21 and 22. The margin of error is plus or minus three percent.

People may say they don't want Bush re-elected, but if he the Republican candidate (which he very likely will be), then people will re-elect him.

Perhaps if Bush threw the Road Map into the garbage, made a few judicial nominee recess appointments, and actually had something to say about the awful recent ruling sof the Supreme Sodomists, then his base would be more excited.

Agreed. I don't see too many conservatives really excited about Bush and that will be the key factor in 2004. If he can re-excite his base then he will have a chance but if he does not then he will be just like his dad.

I personally would feel a lot better about GWB if he were a conservative. I have come to the opinion that he is nothing more than just another politician in many ways.

I'm with him on the war, but beyond that, I can't think of a lot of good things to say about him at this point.

Of course I will vote for him--what other choice do we have? Especially if Hillary runs in '04, and I'm convinced that she will. I think that polls like this one will encourage her to do so.

No, but these are the foot soldiers he needs for his campaign. If they are luke warm or cold then they will just stay home.

Hispanics are natural conservatives; Bush's admission of millions to the country will give him a landslide reelection and the GOP an enduring majority.

LOL

Oh, and BTW, Rove is a genius. :-)

No they're going to stay home. Voting for the lesser of two evils isn't a terribly motivating prospect.

This is the BEGINNING of the onslaught by the socialist/marxists and their media cohorts to destroy GW's chances at re-election. Look for this to PEAK around the time the GIMMIE is selected as his opponent.

IF THEY SAY it long enough and loud enough and repeat it over and over again the public will believe it and like the SHEEP most are follow their words to fruition.

I will not bore all of you with the details, but basically the economy is silently building steam. The industrial production numbers, retail sales figures and employment numbers are all on the rise. The Dow Jones Ind. is ONLY 7% from 10,000 and could easily hit that by the end of the year especially with a typical year end rally.

Expect some sort of major announcement this fall on terrorism (WMD's found somebody captured) and expect another next spring.

If the economy is "perceived" to be back on track and the war on terror is a non-issue this election is a slam dunk no matter how much President Bush has upset us on individual issues.

I thought Concervatives learned their lesson in '92 when they got into a snit becasue GHWB wasn't perfect or Reaganesque enough. Many even said we couldn't possibly have a worse President than George Bush 41. Oh yeah? By throwing a tantrum and flirting with the raving little lunatic, Perot, we wound-up with the worst President in the history of the United States and imperiled our country morally and militarily!

Thanks for keeping this in front of people reading here on FR.

I am a Bush supporter because my of a belief that he is a conservative who must reach compromise with forces that stand in the way of his vision for leading America.

President Bush has indeed taken actions that are not clear and in any event seem inconsistent with conservative principles.

President Bush did come out in defense of marriage yet as you pointed out he signed a DC appropriations bill that contained a provision for domesic partner benefits.

It is my hope that President Bush will have a 2nd term that will give him a mandate to accomplish many of the things that are in his heart.

This "poll" is crazy. President Bush will win in 2004 in a landslide of 1984 proportions. The economy will be booming in 2004, and there will be no more major terror attacks.

I know you are being sarcastic, and I agree the President Bush's handling of the illegal issue has been horrible. We need to 1. stop the invasion, seal the borders and 2. ship the garbage we have here back to wherever the hell they came from. This country was built by LEGAL immigrants, and if the first act an "immigrant" performs in the USA is to break our laws, that is not exactly the type of person we need.

That's why I'm not paying attention to polls until October, 2004. Until then, it's a tea-leaf-reading game.
