Why someone comes here is irrelevant, a red herring. The point is in HOW they come here: legally or illegally. Most of the ancestors you allude to came here legally, having first waited their turn while meeting whatever requirements existed relating to having a job, a place to live, sponsor, and meeting health standards.

So the issue is not immigration; it is legal v. illegal immigration. It is who gets to determine immigration policy -- the potential emigre, or the host country.

Laur, you have it right, Harry on the other hand is not using his mind, just his heart.

What I don't understand about people who "feel" their way through this problem is how they can ignor the plight of the legal immigrant, waiting for his/her turn at residency in America. The illegal is a line jumper, a claim jumper who deserves much worse than simple deportation. (He is taking the future of another, what is the proper price when you take someone's future?)

And Harry, you moved from Santa Cruz, (a left leaning city) to Virginia. I presume to retire as did I, moving from a largely hispanic Bay Area neighborhood to Alabama. I was frankly happy to leave that neighborhood even though the people were friendly, they did not study in school and called the paramedics for every medical emergency. they lived in squalor, 14 or more to a two bedroom home. They send money back to Mexico instead of bettering their lives here. In no way are they supporting this country. Harry, you would not want them in Virginia-- even if they would mow your lawn for free. this is the tradgedy (of the commons) that people like you feel your personal benefit to outweigh the loss to everyone else in society.

PS, I also prefer the conservative mood of Alabama over the liberal slant of everything in California. How do you find the Virginians Harry?
