Geoghan killed in prison (Boston Herald)
Breaking news/by Eric Convey
Saturday, August 23, 2003

Former priest John Geoghan, a notorious pedophile whose case sparked the clergy molestation scandal of the past 18 months, died this afternoon after being attacked at the state prison in Shirley.

``The perpetrator has been isolated,'' said Kelly Nantell, a spokeswoman for the state Deparment of Corrections.

``Our investigation continues,'' she said.

The matter has been referred to the Middlesex County District Attorney Martha Coakley's office.

Geoghan was serving a nine-to-10 year sentence at MCI Shirley for allegedly groping a boy at a Waltham swimming pool.

More than 140 people have claimed they were abused by Geoghan, claiming they were fondled or raped at locations ranging from church rectories to their own homes.

Geoghan would become one the most notorious pedophiles in the country - not only for the extent of his rampage against children but because relevations about his case led to the unraveling of secrecy within the Archdiocese of Boston.

Bernard Cardinal Law's cordial letters to Geoghan, mixing discipline with praise for his priestly service, that pushed many victims from disbelief to outrage.

Geoghan often targeted boys from broken homes, ingratiating himself during frequent visits or fun outings. One victim said Geoghan molested him as the two were driving home from getting an ice cream cone. Others said Geoghan molested them after visiting their rooms at bedtime to tuck them in, sometimes while whispering prayers.

A man like this could be a predator even on innocent prisoners ---many also from broken homes and vulnerable --- with no means of escape. I have a feeling his murder was done in self-defense.

You all forget that some imprisoned beast got his jollies by committing another murder in prison.

I am more concerned about the punishment of the beast for murdering behind bars than I am concerned about a child-molester getting what is coming to him.

It is a sick set of circumstances when a "justice" sytem refrains from taking the official responsibility of executing a child molester or other criminal, then seemingly turns its back while under its very nose, prisoners torture and murder each other.

If you believe the murdered prisoner should be killed for his crimes, than you should be complaining that the "justice" system did not give him the death penalty.

And you should, with equal fervor, demand the criminal who murdered (and probably tortured him) also be given the death penalty.

There are three million people and prison, and I suspect that you would like to kill all those guilty of homicide, which is over 100,000.

"In many respects, Geoghan is not the pivotal figure, it's the people who he wounded and still came forward and the bishops who enabled him but were finally exposed," he said.

What really kills me is that there probably are Muslims, good and evil, following this issue and justifying their hatred of Western culture by watching what we do, not what we say.

If this guy were molesting my kid, I'd have stopped at nothing to see him take a dirt-nap. Still, a prison is not the place for vengence. It's for serving a sentence, whether is seems 'just' or not (lawyers and money play a big role here).

You haven't been to San Diego, lately.

I'd complain ---- but I think this is in Massachusetts --- a very liberal state with very lax penalties for crimes like child rape and murder. But you still don't know the murderer of this Geoghan didn't have to kill him out of self-defense.

No. No. He would like that. May he be married to an ardent and sexy Roman Catholic wife in Hell, after losing his faith (I know that's a given anyway), perpetually hounded by her to get into bed and to obey all requirements of the Roman Catholic faith. Amen.

What I would do is offer physical castration to anyone who fondles a child, and to anyone who thinks they might have a problem in their attraction to children. If they fondle another child or in any other way harm a child, then it would be the death penalty.

Yes --- my way has a lot of compassion because it understands they have sex drives that can never be appropriate, they can live like geldings in society. If you can't use it, you might as well lose it. It gives them a chance to have a normal life and not harm young children.

What about the other pedophiles that aren't priests?

Oh they get their just desserts in prison, too.

But the basic flaw in your latest statement is the implication that sexual drives cannot be contained. They can and must to at least a certain degree. Everyone contains their sexual drive to at least a certain extent, or else we would be like animals copulating in the streets like animals.

The taboo against molesting children is so strong, and rightly so, that even our worst criminals, except for the perpetrators of this particular crime, abide by it.

Excepting of course, Catholic Priests, who, according to their own judgement, are excepted from this very basic taboo. I sincerely hope there is a special place in hell for these "men".

Yeah, that's why Newsday and the New York Slimes, Conservative bedrocks, pulls no punches in "slandering" the Catholic Church on this issue. :)
