FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
CONFISCATED, DESTROYED WEAPONS EQUAL SAFER IRAQ
BAGHDAD, Iraq-Coalition forces continued to confiscate and destroy weapons and ammunition in Iraq on Aug. 22.
Acting on a tip from a local source, the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) captured enemy equipment and detained suspected enemy personnel in East Mosul on Aug. 21. The confiscated weapons included three Russian machine guns, one 60mm mortar tube, two AK-47s, 50 AK-47 magazines, 3,500 rounds of small arms ammunition, one protective mask and various communications equipment.
In an unrelated incident, acting on a tip from a local source, the 101st AD detained one individual for making counterfeit Iraqi Dinar. The 101st confiscated rolls of magnetic security bands, three sheets of 10,000 Iraqi Dinar, an automatic number machine, a press machine and a computer with money software loaded on it.
Fourth Infantry Division soldiers on patrol discovered a weapons cache near some old fighting positions just south of Tikrit. The cache consisted of 200 pounds of propellant, 80 rounds of 14.5mm machine gun ammunition, one loaded AK-47 and one rocket-propelled grenade. An explosive ordnance detonation team will dispose of the weapons.
During an aerial patrol north of Khan Bani Said in Diyala province, an OH-58 D, Kiowa Warrior helicopter discovered a weapons cache consisting of four D-20 towed artillery pieces and 200 artillery rounds. Additional weapons and ammunition seized in other patrols include 50 artillery rounds, 104 rocket-propelled grenade rounds, four rocket-propelled grenade launchers, 22 mortar tubes, 48 high explosive anti-tank 100mm rounds, two claymore mines and six AK-47s.
In the last 24 hours, coalition forces conducted 21 raids, 922 day patrols and 645 night patrols. The units also conducted 233 day patrols and 159 night patrols jointly with Iraqi police.

Ummmmm, other than the machine guns, and a couple of magazines, the same could be said for about 6 of my friends. A 60mm mortar tube is basicly a high strength steel tube with a unique bottom.
Heck, I'm even thinking about buying a Thompson.

Your friends are not Hussein loyalists and terrorist wannabes. Nasty lowlifes tormented the Iraqi people for years. The Iraqi people are ratting 'em out today.
One funny story in a CENTCOM security report from May, I think. Man robs a business owner, comes back the next day for more. The business owner and his neighbors grabbed the guy, tied him up, tossed him in the trunk of a car - and dropped him off in front of the US troops stationed nearby.
The troops are 'winning hearts and minds'.

Beleive me, I understand the situational dynamics.
My comments more directed toward the hyperbolic language used by the report. But then I guess "US troops take a small weapons cache" just doesn't sell as much.

The more terrorists and arms we remove from the fallen regime, the better off the whole world is. I would imagine the scum are removing stuff to just over the borders. Like all borders, there is always a point of entry open.
Thank you USA and Ally troops for all you've done and will continue to do ON BEHALF OF THE WORLD.

Thank you USA and Ally troops for all you've done and will continue to do ON BEHALF OF THE WORLD. Me too!
The link I gave in post #7 leads to an FR post about how the U.S. is buying AKs to arm the New Iraqi government.
What I find ridiculous is that we are destroying AKs and buying AKs at the same time. It's a pure waste of taxpayer dollars.

CENTCOM writers play for the left-wing press, imho, but between the lines is straight-talking, fact-based, kick enemy derriere, rightful military pride. (^;

Their are so many weapons in Iraq, our troops removed 1000 truckloads from Baghdad alone by mid-May. Most of the Iraqi people keep
licensed weapons. The big stuff - RPGs, grenades, missiles - are still around, available to the teeny % (5000 or so) remaining Ba'athists and the 80-100,000 hardened criminals released from jail by Saddam before the war.
On the postive side....the Iraqis are nailing their bad neighbors, and pointing out the weapons caches, and their are fewer bad guys every day thanks to our far more qualified marksmen. (^:

Thanks for ping! It is funny. The existing 'AK-47s' are pretty junky, though. According to our military - they jam, are poorly made. It's worth getting uniform, reliable weapons to help the Iraqis who are willing to fight and die for their own country. They know how bad their enemy is. They are 'softer' targets, and risk much to fight - including the lives of their families.
Saddam cared more about his Info Ministry than his military. Guess we ended the "pen is mightier than the sword" argument.

It's great hearing all these reports about our troops and the other coalition troops getting tips from Iraqis about these weapons caches. Small caches, large caches, they all add up to
less caches for the enemy!!!
I'm ever so grateful to the Iraqis who are coming forward to aid in ousting the enemy, wherever and whenever they can.
