For the first time ever, a federal judge yesterday ordered Kamehameha Schools to enroll a non-Hawaiian student and to allow the 13-year-old boy to remain at the school until the judge lifts his action.

U.S. District Judge David Ezra emphasized that he was not deciding whether the schools' Hawaiians-preferred admissions policy violates federal laws barring racial discrimination.

If the school takes even one penny from the state or the federal government then anyone should be able to apply. However, if they are totally funded by the trust then I think they should be able to offer scholarships to native Hawaians only.

But then again, I support the Masters doing what they want as far as membership too.

She also said she believes that he won't be targeted for reprisals. "I'm not worried about that," she said. "As Judge Ezra had stated, he would expect that he would be treated fairly."

This seems to be a reasonable belief...I have never known anyone who tried to keep certain benefits to members of only his race to retaliate when forced to accept sharing with other races. Can anyone else recall any such episodes???

Van Dyke said congressional passage of the "Akaka bill" — the proposal calling for Hawaiians to receive the same kinds of recognition given to Native American Indians.

Campaign pledge..."The government will do to you what we did to the Indians."

How will that play?

Wonder if they will make them walk all the way to Oklahoma?

Wouldn't that be a blatant call for genocide, because I doubt they could walk across the Pacific?!!

That is so true. This in a state were white kids are excused to stay home from the administration due to it being " kill a haole day".

Hey...walking across Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee, Arkansas, Missouri and Oklahoma was no picnic, either!

You should have seen some of these people speaking out on TV against this little boy. The US Attny here in Hawaii had to come of TV and warn them that to incite any action against this boy would be a hate crime. There was certainly no aloha on their faces yesterday. They were nasty, saying the other students would hurt the boy and that would be what is to be expected. It's getting hot over here.

Been there, done that, about to get the tee-shirt.

The sword of social reform cuts both ways, and is best driven in right up to the hilt. Gets the attention of bullies, bigots, and despots.......

ok, as an afterthought, I'd like to SINCERELY apologize for that last comment. Truthfully, there isnt a kid in our school that would dare even look at Mr. Mohica-Cummings the wrong way, much less beat him up. If someone did, they'd up to their necks in lawsuits. So once again to anyone who took that last comment seriously, dont worry for his safety, ol' nisemono will leave school with everything intact. Sorry again for the outburst.

Chill. Don't act like an uneducated moke.

You are going to give Hawaiians a bad name.

OK, you don't want the guy there. Thats cool.

It shouldn't be merely because of a race thing though. There is far better explainations than that.
