This is the typical mindset of a Howard Dean supporter.

How does a "sadistic little smirk" become a "barely-suppressed, no not really suppressed at all, look of GLEE..."?

Maybe that "sadistic little smirk" was a "smile of satisfaction" that justice had been done. I see no problem with that myself. But for obvious reasons, I'm sure the author wouldn't smile in the least if we confirmed the death of bin Laden. It would be only the other 80% of the country who would feel that way....

Apparently 8 years of Clinton set back "Geoff's" mind a little! (I never trust anyone who spells 'Jeff' in a high-faluting way.)

Two outtakes from the article:

"In the end, it comes down to the simple issue of character...My standards are not those of everyone. I don't really hold any feelings against those prone to sins of the appetite, as Bill Clinton was. I have trouble holding poor judgment against those who demonstrate it. All I ask is some evidence of a fundamental respect for the dignity of people. And I don't think George W. Bush has that respect."

"When I look at George W. Bush, I don't see a patriot. I see a lying, psychopathic narcissist."

This #%&#$% is unbelievable!! Now, one last comment. The following are two of Alinsky's "Rules for Radicals". Has jeffy used either of them?

RULE 5: "Ridicule is man's most potent weapon." There is no defense. It's irrational. It's infuriating. It also works as a key pressure point to force the enemy into concessions. (Pretty crude, rude and mean, huh? They want to create anger and fear.)

RULE 12: Pick the target, freeze it, personalize it, and polarize it." Cut off the support network and isolate the target from sympathy. Go after people and not institutions; people hurt faster than institutions. (This is cruel, but very effective. Direct, personalized criticism and ridicule works.)

The author is an out of control nutcase. He can't connect any intellectual dots. He must eat his $.99 over-cooked burgers for breakfast, and shop at 'Dopes R Us.' What a dolt.

"But the fact that we MUST kill NEVER excuses taking delight THAT we kill."

You and I both know that ol' Geoff-babes would rather have a treasonous bee esser like X42 who is the master of Arkanside.

The Bent One could have offed his own friends (Vince Foster, Ron Brown) and ol' Geoff-babes wouldn't be bothered in the slightest.

A man who doesn't bother to care about the enormity of his job, the enormity of its consequences, and the enormity of this glorious Republic we've brought forth.

As opposed to the man getting a blow job while sending our troops into battle?

Geoff doesn't recognize disgusting when he sees it.

Oh after the 2004 election, they will be reduced to babbling maniacs sitting in a corner in pile of their own filth chewing their nails to the bone, drooling profusely, muttering nonsense about Florida chads.

But the final mark of disrespect… the gut-level intuition that leads me to label him an EVIL man, rather than a merely despicable one is his casual contempt for human life.

Mouthed by a person who is most certainly a pro-abotion liberal.

Hey, folks. I'm glad to see y'all enjoyed my little post over on Slate. A little disappointed that so few of you came on by to discuss it with me. Still, I got wind of this page, so I came by to say hello.

Here's a grabbag of responses for y'all, in case you're interested:

"Hate so blinding, the left can't see straight. The last person they hated this bad, was Reagan."

That's probably true of the left in general. He was a hero to me... but then again, I was three years old when he took office... still, I remember him fondly.

"Why don't ya just let Geoff know what you think his opinion."

Thanks to all those of you who did come by to do exactly that.

"Spitting, spluttering blind hatred with an emotional rationale. Come to think of it, that's a pretty good description of the left. It's so good to see this guy developing ulcers!"

Are you telilng me you don't have an emotional investment in politics either? It's good for the right, good for the left, and good for everyone in between. Don't worry about my ulcers though. I'm honestly not THAT upset.

"Does anyone remember the spider-character from "the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" who had been reincarnated many times, only to be killed by the same man over and over? The man walks into the spider's cave and beholds a shrine of Hatred (of him)."

I remember that. It was funnier than my post...

"I'd have to say his self-assessment is right on the mark."

I do strive to be honest.

"A Christian hater I'd bet...."

No, on that count you are wrong. I am no longer a Christian due to a lack of faith (gotta' be honest, after all...) but I am still an admirer of those who do have the faith. Well, most of 'em at any rate.

"Call me when the "Intelligensia" figures out that they need to **appear** moderate. Until then, it's just Dukakis in a tank all over again."

Thanks for calling me "the 'Intelligensia'". But I think you give me far too much credit.

"Just what I used to see whenever Bill C. was on."

Funny, huh?

"This guy would have had an aneurism during WWII, when the killing of Japs was the popular national pastime."

I don't think so. My grandfather served proudly in the US Marine Corps during World War II in the Pacific Theater. I am personally proud of the service he did for my country. He never spoke of killing the Japanese as sport, though. It usually came across as an unpleasant, but necessary, thing to do.

"Y'know, we aren't Clinton fans here (duh), but I don't think I've ever read such vitriolic hatred of this level ever written about him here; certainly not on Slate ;) Am I mistaken?"

If you ever find out, please share.

"Interesting, he's led to hatred because he doesn't like someone that advocates killing terrorists. Traitor."

I advocate killing terrorists. I don't advocate enjoying it.

"When I look at Bill Clinton, I don't see a patriot. I see a lying, psychopathic narcissist."

Well, there you go. We each see the world through our own eyes.

"HATE IS NOT A FAMILY VALUE, RIGHT?"

Right. It's a very unpleasant feeling.

"Whew. I thought this was an actual editorial by Slate, and not a vanity-post by someone on Slate's discussion-board. I can ignore it now."

Yup. Just some guy who got a lot more attention than he expected...

"This is the typical mindset of a Howard Dean supporter."

Probably is, I suppose. Not all of us though. I'm a tad bit on the extreme side.

"Maybe that "sadistic little smirk" was a "smile of satisfaction" that justice had been done. I see no problem with that myself. But for obvious reasons, I'm sure the author wouldn't smile in the least if we confirmed the death of bin Laden. It would be only the other 80% of the country who would feel that way...."

What can I say? Do you judge people based on your gut reactions? I do. I just don't think that little chortle is a sign of a healthy soul... what can you do? I never said people would find it a persuasive argument. It was just what I feel...

"Apparently 8 years of Clinton set back "Geoff's" mind a little! (I never trust anyone who spells 'Jeff' in a high-faluting way.) "

My parents named me. I never voted for Clinton or Gore.

"This #%&#$% is unbelievable!! Now, one last comment. The following are two of Alinsky's "Rules for Radicals". Has jeffy used either of them?"

No. Never heard of 'em. I was just sharing my thoughts. I don't believe myself to be "in a war" or in need of "weapons." I just don't like George W. Bush. I was asked why, I explained myself.

"The author is an out of control nutcase. He can't connect any intellectual dots. He must eat his $.99 over-cooked burgers for breakfast, and shop at 'Dopes R Us.' What a dolt."

That is an interesting insult. I really enjoyed it.

"With any luck - you'll be put out of your misery soon!! Just do it quietly and don't annoy us."

I'm not quiet and I am annoying. You'll have to ignore me.

"Heh! The next 5 years are obviously going to be a lot loooooooonger for some than for others."

Yup. Time will tell, who that will be...

"As opposed to the man getting a blow job while sending our troops into battle? "

You're probably right. I like blowjobs, and don't see them as inconsistent with... well with anything I do in my public life. They're just one of those private things, you take 'em when you can...

"Oh after the 2004 election, they will be reduced to babbling maniacs sitting in a corner in pile of their own filth chewing their nails to the bone, drooling profusely, muttering nonsense about Florida chads."

D'ya think? That would be unfortunate...

"Mouthed by a person who is most certainly a pro-abotion liberal."

Is he?

"Does this clymer not remember the innocent men women and children MURDERED on Sept. 11, 2001?"

I remember it very clearly. It has given us obligations, both to exact vengeance and to prevent future crises of its kind. But it has only changed what we should do, not the kind of men we should be.

The Left is tough to watch these days. With increased numbers of American soldiers and civilians dying abroad, they strut about all puffed up, bragging how they have the biggest I Hate America pin.

It is ironic that we get back-to-back presidents that generate such extreme reactions form the Kool-Aid drinkers from both sides. Righties loathe BC because of character issues and Lefties loathe W because of character issues. The two men could not be more different where character is the issue.

"Call me when the "Intelligensia" figures out that they need to **appear** moderate. Until then, it's just Dukakis in a tank all over again." - Southack

"Thanks for calling me "the 'Intelligensia'". But I think you give me far too much credit."

Oh heavens no, my comment was far broader than to just single you out.

I'm thrilled that Donna Brazille and Gray Davis are claiming a vast Republican "conspiracy" to steal elections, for instance. I'm thrilled that Terry McAuliffe and John Kerry are screaming utter nonsense about "Bush lying" regarding some 16 words in a state of the Union address that was given some 3 months **after** Democrats had already voted to authorize Bush to use force in Iraq.

And I'm absolutely gleeful that Hillary Clinton is blaming President Bush for the entire NorthEast power blackout.

You see, those sorts of rants can gain traction in the cocktail circuits of Manhattan and in the bathhouses of San Francisco, but such extremism typically doesn't play with mainstream Americans.

And mainstream America is what and who that decides our national elections.

So when I see posters such as yourself get taken in by such extremism as that displayed by Donna, Terry, Gray, and Hillary, I simply smile and get a warm feeling all over.

I suspect that President Reagan felt the same way when Dukakis started publicly wearing that same sort of extremist cloth.

Of course, this sort of thing works both ways. A few of us on the Right learned that lesson back when Goldwater was feeding us the red meat that we so craved at the time.

The key, however, is that we on this forum certainly hope that we actually learned the Goldwater lesson. We shouldn't be giving off wild perceptions of extremism during elections any longer.

But you'll have to forgive us if we embrace the schadenfruede offered to us if our ideological opponents can't resist falling into that same trap.

So please, go forth and write many more thoughtful posts encouraging your fellow travelers to embrace the most radical of feelings, positions, and solutions.

For as long as I can pick up the New York Times and see that Bush is supposed to be responsible for every conceivable problem from solar eclipses down to the trash not getting picked up, I'll continue to know that the Left hasn't learned our own Goldwater lesson yet.
