7.1 magnitude earthquake in NZ

A 7.1 magnitude earthquake has been felt throughout the deep south of New Zealand this morning.

Callers from Dunedin, Invercargill, Wanaka, Oamaru and Christchurch say the tremor lasted up to two minutes.

One of those jolted awake was reporter Diane Brown, who says at about 12 minutes past midnight she was woken by a long rattling sound.

She says that was followed by a very strong rocking motion.

South Island police say they were inundated with calls, and received 115 in about half an hour, mostly from the Southland area.

They say there has been only minor damage, and no report of injuries.

The Institute of Geological and Nuclear Sciences says the earthquake measured 7.1 on the Richter Scale, and was centred 70 kilometres north-west of Te Anau at a depth of 12 kilometres.

It struck at 12:12am, and the Institute says it would have been felt strongly in the south of the South Island.

It was at the very southern tip of the South Island, well away from most inhabited areas of the South Island:

Powerful earthquake hits southwest New Zealand

WELLINGTON, Aug 22 (Reuters) - A powerful earthquake rocked New Zealand's remote southwest Fiordland region on Friday but there were no initial reports of damage or injuries, emergency service officials said.

The shallow earthquake measuring 7.1 on the Richter scale struck shortly after midnight on Friday (1212 GMT Thursday), New Zealand's Institute of Geological and Nuclear Sciences said.

The earthquake would have been felt strongly in the south of the South Island, the institute said.

"If you were sitting in your chair, it gave you a bloody fright," said the duty officer for emergency services in Southland, New Zealand's southernmost province.

State-owned National Radio reported that power had been cut to two small towns.

The quake gave a brief jolt to the foreign exchange market in London. "Our forex guys jumped up and down for a few seconds and then they realised where the earthquake was," said Jim Webber, chief economist at Toronto Dominion Securities in London.

The tremor was centred nearly 500 km (300 miles) southwest of the South Island's main city of Christchurch and about 100 km (60 miles) from the mountain resort of Queenstown.

Senior Sergeant Ian Freeman of the Southern Communications Centre said police were inundated with calls, with 115 emergency calls in half an hour.

"We've had stuff falling off walls and that kind of thing but no serious damage nor injuries reported," he told the New Zealand Press Association.

The earthquake's centre was 70 km (40 miles) northwest of the small town of Te Anau, not far from Milford Sound, a tourist attraction known for its beauty which is currently cut off by road because of heavy winter snow.

New Zealand, perched on a junction between two tectonic plates, is very active geologically. Scientists record thousands of earthquakes a year in the South Pacific nation of four million people.

It was the second quake to hit the area in two days. A quake measuring 4.7 struck 40 km northwest of Te Anau on August 20.

I had a business associate on Guam. They experienced a very strong earthquake about a year ago. I called the guy to see if everything was okay and he acted as if it was nothing more than a light shower.

Some of these places experience these earthquakes quite often and just don't view them the way we do. Southern Californians have experienced a number of quakes in the 6 to 7 range over the last decade. For the most part, there's little damage to areas not directly under the fault.

Large quakes can be potentially devistating, and they are for those affected. But you can live a block or two away from the major damage and still have very little damage yourself.

Interesting, a vanity with a sunset provision, I think that may be a first. Were you inspired by Justice O'Connor's 25 year clause in her Michigan AA ruling rationale?

NZ earthquake felt in Sydney

A MASSIVE earthquake which jolted New Zealand's South Island has been felt in Sydney with a high-rise hotel near the airport experiencing mild tremors. Geoscience Australia seismologist Dr Mark Leonard said the 7.5 Richter scale quake occurred off the southwest tip of the South Island, 100km from Queenstown in the Milford Sound region at around 10.10pm (AEST) yesterday.

While half of Geoscience's measuring instruments in Australia went off the scale when the quake hit, it was also felt by guests at the Hilton Hotel near Sydney airport.

A hotel spokeswoman said the tremors were felt in the upper floors of the building but did not cause any major problems with guests.

"It was nothing that caused any problems for us here, and I didn't even feel them on the ground floor," she said. Dr Leonard said it wasn't unusual that a quake of such magnitude would be felt from such a long distance.

"Three or four times a year someone in a high rise building will feel the long swaying feeling of an overseas earthquake."

"For earthquakes of this size it is not uncommon to feel it at such great distances," Dr Leonard said.

It was the largest quake to hit New Zealand's South Island since 1929 and was felt as far south as Invercargill, where one woman said the shaking lasted about three minutes.

There were no immediate reports of injuries.

"This is a globally significant earthquake - we would only expect two to three earthquakes of this magnitude to occur around the world each year," Dr Leonard said.

,,, good morning from Wellington, New Zealand.

Firstly, y'all know more about the quake than I do. It's 8,42am Friday here and the quake hit around 12,15am. My radio alarm clock wakes me each morning at 5,00. This morning, the first I knew was from the report on the radio. I understand some people in Aussie felt it. I live on the Kapiti Coast, 50km/30 miles north of Wellington City and I slept as soundly as usual.

Secondly, thanx to all who have asked if I'm OK, by FReeMAIL and on this thread - I've quickly glanced over it and I'll start at the top now and read thru it.
