HELP, PLEASE. I have a friend on the South Island and I'm extremely eager to hear news of the 7.0 quake there. Have searched the web extensively and have a streaming NZ radio audio and still can't find much of anything beyond that there was one and no injuries yet reported.
But the 7.0 quake is not that far from Queenstown near the South Wester tip of NZ. And, the depth is not very deep according to USGS.
Seems to me there SHOULD be more news unless it's because of the night there and the relatively low population????
Any suggestions or NZ FReepers who can report???
Thanks much. Just very eager to hear.

You're very welcome.
Someone else posted it here at FR and I've had it bookmarked ever since; just wanted to pass it along.

I had a business associate on Guam. They experienced a very strong earthquake about a year ago. I called the guy to see if everything was okay and he acted as if it was nothing more than a light shower.
Some of these places experience these earthquakes quite often and just don't view them the way we do. Southern Californians have experienced a number of quakes in the 6 to 7 range over the last decade. For the most part, there's little damage to areas not directly under the fault.
Large quakes can be potentially devistating, and they are for those affected. But you can live a block or two away from the major damage and still have very little damage yourself.

[VANITY--TEMP--PLSE DELETE IN BEFORE 12:00 PDT]Interesting, a vanity with a sunset provision, I think that may be a first. Were you inspired by Justice O'Connor's 25 year clause in her Michigan AA ruling rationale?

THANKS.
The 6.9 or whatever it was in 1997? in Taiwan way down island
REALLY shook the concrete covered steel frame apt building I was in. No real damage, as you say. But was a rude wakeup! And it went on for longer than many.
Most quakes felt in Taipei are from the Hualien area midway down the east coast. And those in the range of 5.5 or even 6.0 are not at all troublesome to us in Taipei.
There is an area further down the coast where the east coast railway line crosses and area under CONSTANT movement and has to be adjusted regularly.
The planet is . . . groaning. We shall see to what greater degree and I don't really want to get into THAT issue!
Thanks for your kind post.

No.
Didn't hear about that.
Just didn't want to clog it up with what was primarily, for me, a rather time limited need.

Am sure all is well with my friend.
If Queenstown didn't suffer damage, my friend didn't. He's further away.
I have wondered--given the huge snow storm--if the quake shook loose some destructive avalanches in the resort areas.

7 is really big It can knock down stone structures. Wood structures should be fine. Bookshelves may fall over if not secured. Most injuries are from TVs falling onto people lying in bed.
