California Needs Conservatism (by Rush Limbaugh)
The Wall Street Journal ^ | August 20, 2003 | Rush Limbaugh

Listening to some Republicans and conservatives on the possibility of winning the California governorship lately has been dismaying. "We don't really want to win this race. California is in such a mess it can't be fixed and we will be tagged as failures if we try. Let the Democrats continue to stew in their mess." Or a variation on this theme: "Whoever wins will not have a mandate so he/she will not be able to govern, especially with the huge Democrat majorities in the California legislature."

I think if you check - you will find some of those state house RAT's are up for re-election in November. I wonder how many of them are in safe districts?

Well to see them voted out would sure be a good thing

I don't think there is a question as to whether a "true" conservative could fix the problems in CA .. they could and they would do a good job.

I think the question is whether a "true" conservative could get elected at this time with the political climate that CA is in now.

Yes. There is something puzzling about Rush's piece. You could see him as criticizing someone like Ann Coulter, who has said she thinks California a lost cause and perhaps it would be better if a Democrat twisted in the wind.

But Rush can't be serious about either McClintock or Simon winning the governership. So why criticize some conservatives who are just reconciling themselves to the fact that a conservative can't win right now? I'm sure Coulter and just about anyone else on the right thinks conservative principles are the right answer for California; they're just consoling themselves because they think a conservative Republican can't win.

It's fine to support conservative principles, even in CA. As far as the governor's race goes, though, we're stuck in the real world. We have to choose among available alternatives. Arnie, or defeat?

Man, I don't even live in California, and I don't like the choice. In fact, this discussion reminds me of the angst the Democrats go through-- oh so publicly-- all the time now. Bush lite, as they say, or a principled socialist who will lead us to defeat? If their situation bothers them even as much as this annoying governor's race in another state bothers me, I feel badly for them. Thank goodness it's them in that situation, and not us, when it comes to the presidency.

Actually, ''omnis Gallia delenda est'' (agreed, and the good news is that all we must do here is be patient...self-implosion is in progress), but in any case I agree completely.

The only solution, IMNNHO, that works in Calbania is the Randian one: figuratively or literally, the ''lights'' have to go out. Therefore, vote McClintock if you have a vote (pardon me, but Simple Simon is a fraud in my view), and let Bustout win it.

Three years and another $30 B in debt, bond ratings likely below junk level, the gov't union scum scrambling to keep their rice bowl (delicious thought), and at that point even the majority of Calbanians may take the hint.

This is their 2nd time at bat in one election cycle, there is more than just the governorship on the line here.

Oh I gave up trying to understand Rush a while ago .. sometimes I agree with him and sometimes I don't. But this is american and he has the right to his opinion.

Getting a "true" conservative elected is not out of the question .. it's floating in the middle .. it's possible it could happen .. heck anything is possible .. CA got this recall when many didn't think that was possible.

The comparing Arnold to Reagan I have to admit, I don't get .. Arnold is nothing like Reagan. Yes it is possible that Arnold can fix the financial problems in CA, but the truth also is, Arnold is not a "true" conservative.

Do I think McClintock could be a good Gov for the State of CA .. from what I've been able to read about him .. yes he could .. but the quesion comes back to .. can he get elected?? .. From what I've seen on the many many many threads here at FR and articles in the paper .. I don't know .. Well, let me rephrase that .. if everyone one is still split .. no he can't

I have no dog thing fight since I don't live in CA .. but the conservatives really need to figure this out and who they will through thier support behind .. otherwise they might end up with Bustamante .. or worse Davis isn't recalled

I hope you're right. The only way I see to get a true conservative elected is for all the Repubs to drop out but one, and I don't think The Terminator's going to drop out.

right answer for California; they're just consoling themselves because they think a conservative Republicans can't win.

That the point people the live here know conservative Republican can win

Its just a question of tactics

The killer is the defeatism from the party out side the state... California is being lost based on a false Hollywood stereotype on what California is

... I love when out of state people come here and drive up the Interstate 5 up the Central Valley... Califorina is a 180 degrees out of wack with there stereotype... other then LA and The Bay Area most of the state is conservative Republican

If you live here it up the Central Valley and through the Inland Empire... then San Diego and Orange County ... bypass LA and The Bay Area... there the inland strongholds so bypass just like In WW2 in the Pacific

It's the big cities that always cause the problems

PA is like that .. Philly was been bought by the Dems long ago

Oh he might drop out...of the GOP all together. He is a rare breed in Hollywood anyway and after the trashing he has received by the GOP right, why should he continue in a party that obviously holds him in contempt. That may be a good thing since "rinos" are as bad, or worse, than liberals and are only standing in the way of a national conservative surge.

You do know that you are betting your, and all conservatives, credibility on that don't you? This is strike 2. 3 strikes and you're out and so are a lot of others if this ends up like the Simon effort. I saw every one of these arguments put forward about Simon and look how well that turned out. I said before that it is none of my business and I personally hope that McClintock ends up in a head to head with the democrat. It will finally resolve the strategy issue for the foreseeable future.

I'd be much more impressed with Rush's touching praise of Reagan if he had actually voted for the Gipper.

We conservatives didn't get where we are today with this kind of thinking and we can't lead in the future with this attitude.

California is a liberal proving-ground run amok. Its crushing debt -- resulting from years of pandering to unions, bureaucrats, illegal immigrants, environmentalists and trial lawyers -- has led to huge tax increases, major cuts in basic services, a reduction in the state's credit rating, brown-outs, water shortages and a large exodus of citizens from the state.

Lawyers, or ??? ...

I know, I know !! It says Texas, not California. It's the best and closest I have right now ! ...
