Sounds like a plan.
There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.
Consequently, you are no longer foreigners and aliens, but fellow citizens with God's people and members of God's household, built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the chief cornerstone. In him the whole building is joined together and rises to become a holy temple in the Lord. And in him you too are being built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by his Spirit
I hope I'm dressed properly when He appears</sarcasm off
To: Theo
Yes that's different. In modern writing style, the author would probably put Messiah or Christ in double quotes to indicate the special meaning.

You wrote:
Edwards IIRC had some interesting theories about Satan. That this now-fallen angel was originally intended to be the savior of mankind, but since he dropped out of heaven, Jesus had to do the job.
Sorry to keep beating this horse (I really do admire Edwards, and am wanting to know if he's got some heresy in his writings)....
So it looks like Edwards found a Scriptural reference to Lucifer as having been "annointed," which contains the same root-word as "Messiah." Therefore, the pre-fallen angel of light Lucifer was a type of "Messiah" (by the very etymology of the word) -- which is entirely *entirely* different from "Savior."
Make sense?
Thanks for bringing that up -- it's good to delve into rich theology like this!

The only dress you will need at that time is His righteousness.
To: HiTech RedNeck
Already wearing it ... thanks
To: Theo
I apologize for the misreference. It was off the top of my head.
But what is this that Edersheim mentions about the pre-fallen Lucifer being viewed by Edwards as a "ministering spirit" to mankind? Is this being pulled out of thin air?
To: HiTech RedNeck
The only dress you will need at that time is His righteousness :-) Well-said!
An interesting thing about "dress." Think about this: the first animal sacrifice was when the Creator killed an animal to provide clothing to cover Adam and Eve, to cover the shame they acquired as a result of their sin. And Jesus the Spotless Lamb was the second sacrifice that God performed, so that by "putting on Christ" our shame might be covered, once for all.
It's a great plot the Creator has written! :-)

Once again you are so off base it is pityful.
Hypocrites looking down their noses at people because they are in the "wrong attire" for worship. You are shameful.
Man looks at the outward appearance but God looks at the heart.
Judge Bannon will be Judged, your log is ready for harvest.
Make sure bandit gets a bone.

Oh, I looked over at CCEL. I will have to dig through this sometime when I have more time to parse through Edwards' prose. I'd hate to have to diagram one of his longer sentences.
To: Theo
I don't know if the word coincidence in English means anything more than a happy mnemonic, but God dressed Adam and Eve in animal "hides" and our sins are "hidden" in Jesus.

Nice point. Thanks.

You're also not to lay a stumbling block before your brother. If your dress or appearance is distracting or unpleasant, then you've distracted your brother or a lost person from the focus, which should be on what you're saying, on Christ and the Gospel. It would be wrong to knowingly try to draw attention to yourself, to your own body, rather than to Christ. Understand, I like to express myself too w/dress, and I do, but not in excess or distracting. Humility includes dress and appearance.
Does anyone get what I'm saying (I did an earlier post on this w/some examples)? Jesus dressed like others around him - He didn't try to overly express himself w/green hair or colored tatoos or tongue piercings. Why? Because He wanted the focus on what He was saying, NOT on his physical outward appearance (the Bible says he wasn't remarkable in appearance in any way). Therefore I hope we can all imagine that He was also groomed and not grungy....in order to reach people...not lay a distracting stumbling block before them. Keeping our temple is a Godly thing. We have bodies while here on earth, and we still need to keep them and be courteous in the natural to others. Don't get so spiritually high and mighty that you think it's all heart and no outward. Faith w/out works is dead. So say "love" all you want, but show it. That's outward...and is a case in point.

the Bible says he wasn't remarkable in appearance in any way In fact, had no stately form or majesty that we should be drawn to him. This would seem to suggest a short, plain looking man, not the taller, more handsome figure that is seen in popular depictions or on the Shroud.

This is a continuation of the thread on CCM music and the apostasy that CCM is.Could you throw me a link to that thread? Thanks!

So, who's going to reach the sub culture of green haired, pierced people. If being dressed in a shirt and tied accomplished that mission they'd all be mormons by now.
Its not about focus, its about conscience. If what I wear is causing my brother to sin, I need to be aware of it and act accordingly. But if the stumbling he experiences is merely that he is judging me as less than correct that's his stuff, not mine. He needs to get the judgemental log out of his own eye first. Otherwise, we're reduced to the lowest common denominator and can't offend anyone ... I believe they call it political correctness out in the world.

I remember the stories of the Indians in Oregon being made to wear suits and forbidden to speak their native languages in order to make them "good Christians" this mentality is alive and well.
To: SpinnerWebb
I absolutely love that song! Not just for the lyrical content as much as for the "crossover" success it is getting. My reason for for saying this is this: Folks that I know who otherwise would not listen to "christian" music are hearing it and taking the words to heart. Kids and adults alike. So before anyone says of the crossing over that "it is not of God" remember, the earth and all that is in it belongs to God and if He chooses to "use" such a vehicle as this song to "minister" and draw people to Him then He certainly will do so.
