I just delivered my to the Citadel in Charleston SC this weekend, and as a Knob , during dining (MESS).....he's challenged by the upperclassmen to provide totally useless but interesting facts.
They seem to like military, world, and American history, especially military quotes.
I told him that I had a great source.... FREEPERS !.
So try and help a kid out.

Thanks Robe

Armored knights raised their visors to identify themselves when they rode past royalty. This custom has evolved into the modern military salute.

"Face the music," or accept your punishment, comes from the British army, where a court-martialed soldier had to stand and face a drum squad when hearing his punishment. The term "drummed out of the military" also comes from this practice.

Military Trivia PING:

The main gun on the American M1A1 Abrams Main Battle Tank is a German-made Rheinmetall 120-mm smoothbore gun, capable of firing High-Explosive Anti-Tank (HEAT) rounds, and Armor-Piercing, Fin-stabilized, Discarding Sabot (APFSDS) rounds, either of which will provide an indiscriminate screaming hot death to any of the foes of America with precision accuracy.

Sailors of the old-time Navy kept their hair greased into pony tails with ship's tar. To avoid this mess from dirtying their uniforms, a reversed "bib" was added which could be removed, replaced and washed separately.
The current Navy enlisted dress uniform still features this reversed "bib".

As a former Citadel Cadet, I feel for your son. Evening mess was a bear.

Why is an Artilleryman referred to as a Red Leg?

Officer’s uniforms had the color of their branch as a strip down their pants. These way commanders could look over the battlefield and tell who was who. The color for artillery was red, thus red leg.

The last side arm developed for mounted cavelry in the US Army was the 1911 Colt 45ACP.

A version of it is still used today in Iraq by Spec Ops and Marine MEU units.

Imagine a horse pistol now ridding in a Hummer?

The Royal Navy salutes with the palm in to hide the tar from working with and climbing on the standing rigging.

After Nelson was killed at Trafalgar, his corpse was preserved in a barrel of rum for the trip back to England. For this reason, rum was known as Nelson's Blood in the RN.

Have him relay the following:

On February 21st, 1865, after the evacuation of Charleston, the 55th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry (African-American unit), was the first Union regiment to enter that city.

Oh, and the average number of missions a USAAF heavy bomber in Europe survived in WWII was 11... Keep in mind the crew didn't go home until they finished 25-50.

1. The Harvest Falcon kitchen can feed 1100 troops, is all electric, and beats the heck out of the old kitchen tents and M2 burners.

2. Air Force doesn't allow steel wool in any dining facility.

Oh, I thought this was supposed to be trivia about dining (mess) facilities. 8>)

Four of Pat Conroy's novels have been turned into movies.

(Actually, he might be better off not using this one.)
