Why is an Artilleryman referred to as a Red Leg?
Officers uniforms had the color of their branch as a strip down their pants. These way commanders could look over the battlefield and tell who was who. The color for artillery was red, thus red leg.

I understand they were also known as " Chigger Heads" Due to the red trim in their hats
