[history]
A course called "How to be Gay: Male Homosexuality and Initiation," scheduled this fall, has reignited a culture war at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.
A family-values lobbyist is leading public opposition to the self-proclaimed "uncompromising political militancy" of the professor who teaches "lesbian-gay-bisexual-transgender."

>>If you want to learn to be gay just watch 'Queer Eye for a Straight Guy' <<

They are having me stay in a quad apartment in the South Quadrangle. I have been praying that I will get some good roommates that won't have a problem with my political or religious beliefs.

One hard question you will have to answer for yourself is how to write the essays.
Some where along the line you will be shunted into a class with a liberal professor whose opinions you find offensive.
Okay, you keep your mouth shut in class, but then comes the test.
You have to provide an essay on something the prof has lectured on.
What do you do?
Option A: Declare your own opinion knowing it will almost certainly get a grade well south of an A; or
Option B: You are a smart kid, just put the spin the teach wants and get a grade that will help you graduate and maybe go on to post-graduate studies.
It is a conundrum.
But I will tell you, your brilliantly constructed tome will not change the prof's beliefs and will just drag down the old GPA. And the only people who will probably ever read it are him and you.
My advice, if you need it, is to know what you belive but do what is best for you.
Sorry, sometimes the world stinks but those who manage to navigate the rapids usually wind up with fewer bruises.

Sounds to me along the same guidelines as the theory that only black families should be able to adopt black children. Your orientation determines your behaviour according to both doctrines and this behaviour is learnt.
Not clear to me why this should be; you are born black or homosexual (or both) and your behaviour should be an expression of your own personality, not that of the community that wishes to claim or disclaim you.

They've actually done something similar to that in Canada, except with native peoples. A white couple can't, or it's very difficult for a white couple to adopt a native or part native child. There's a case before the courts right now about a half native child whose lived with her foster parents for years since she was a small child but now because "it could damage the childs self identity" a native band wants to take custody of the child. The stupid thing is it'll probably be more damaging to remove the child from the only home and parents she's known so she can be "closer to her culture" (another misguided lefist policy)

Your tax dollars at work: a University Course promoting a deviant life style. But, I'm sure they're doing this For the Children.

>>They've simply managed to get everyone to start referring to them as gay because they do hate to hear themselves accurately referred to as what they are ... HOMOSEXUALS.
The SSAD works, too. The Same-Sex Attraction Disordered.

Good luck and may God bless your attempt to get educated.
What the other responders said re your comment is true enough, however I would add this:
College life is much more than politics. Yes, the political atmosphere at UM (I assume you mean UM Ann Arbor) is oppressive (I went there in the 80's & it hasn't improved since then), but I still managed to have a good some fun, meet my future wife, get a good education, and start my career following graduation.
I had and still have some rather left-leaning friends whom I met there, and we still challenge each other. But most of the time when we talk it isn't about politics.
If you see all of your college experiences through the narrow lens of politics, you will end up bitter, disillusioned, and defeated. My advice is to rise above it, find a good campus Christian group, make friends of all people, and try to be an influence for good while you're there.
Sorry for sounding like a hallmark card!

To think, I am going to be moving into my dormroom at the University of Michigan in less than 10 days. I am going to have to put up with this leftist, anti-American, and anti-Christian crap for atleast the next 4 years. There's a pretty strong Conservative faction on campus. They succeeded in shouting down the anti-war protesters last fall. I wouldn't worry too much, just choose your classes wisely. See Michigan Review, the U-M Conservative newspaper.

"Maybe we should start up a class that is called, "How to be Anti-Gay". Would that be ok?""How to be Straight" would fill instantly. Especially if they had a lab with it.
