Because of the failure of good men/women of the California Republican
Party to act aggressively and intelligently.

And the fractious nature of the California GOP will give California voters what they
really deserve: Mexifornia, as termed by Victor Davis Hanson, when
Governor Bustamante is sworn in for the next three years.

I'm sure we'll see the Chronicle's retraction tomorrow

There won't be a retraction. We'll see plenty of letters to the editor from the usual nut cases, and an official statement from the highest levels of the RAT party which will:

(a) attack the author and his current employer,
(b) blame "friend of George W. Bush Ken Lay" for the current crisis,
(c) blame Republican legislators for placing obstacles and blocking the RATS' road to Utopia.

This is THE critical piece, as far as I am concerned:

"The result is that monumental crises are piling up. Take California's antiquated, abuse-ridden workers' compensation system, for example. Since 1995, when statewide private and public employer-paid workers' comp premiums were $5.7 billion, a steady increase of fabricated employee injuries, medical service-provider overcharges and ambulance-chasing attorneys have driven statewide employer premiums to $15 billion. Experts suggest that increases to $20 billion can be expected within the next six months. In a hearing, the state's Democratic insurance commissioner, John Garamendi, testified about the threat of the system's imminent collapse if legislative reform was not quickly forthcoming. Within the hour, the committee's liberal majority killed all five of the measures that would have assisted the state's employers, as well as millions of their employees, to avoid the coming crisis."

I have been at the table in discussions with legislative representatives and EVERYONE there agreed that the cost of Workers Comp. is THE NUMBER ONE ISSUE.

Its is once again "the economy, stupid." Without a healthy economy there are no employers, there are no jobs, no unions, no healthy families, no money for quality of life programs.

In my opinion, restoring California as a good place to do business is a keystone to this race. Conservatives will muck it up if they allow this to be side tracked on issues like abortion, school prayer, homosexuality, etc. The race should be run on the economy and what the candidate will do to turn that around. It also should be run on the state budget. Pulling spending back to match income and tying future largess on social and other programs to inscreased state income from economic growth.

I am in Pennsylvania and it's no party here, either.
We have the ultimate slimy scumbag for a governor (Ed Rendell!!!) but fortunately we have a safely Republican legislature and two Republican Senators.

And like California, we have a bunch of huge parasite nests, including Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, which are constantly spitting Democrat scumbags out into the suburbs to water down the vote of the decent, working traditional American families (Republicans).

So feel free to heckle if the liberal toilet swirl takes us under - - I will be right next to you, fingers desperately grasping the rim of the bowl, heckling even louder.

Sometimes I think it is too late for the whole country.

Seriously, California bashing is at an all time high. People make smug comments about how they can't wait until we drop into the Pacific Ocean. Some of us are trapped here for the time being, and instead of drinking koolaid, we're trying the best we can to fix things. Just what you, and people like you, are trying to do in PA. PA is a beautiful state, but it too has been devastated by job loss and democrats like CA...

Somehow I don't think Pittsburgh voters are too happy with Rendell right now. It seems the ultimate union hack has forgotten those Pittsburgh union voters who helped him get into office.

THAT SAID, I'm from PA too, and Rendell is as close to a Democrat fiasco as we've gotten in years. The unemployment rate goes higher up the further West (from Philly) you go, and there's no money in the budget to stimulate jobs, and no money for the DCNR to hire more specialists to clean up the storm damage to Pennsylvania's parks (which are a LARGE part of our economy)...but Eddie can sign an EO handing out millions for "alternative fuel" research and hand all state funds previously earmarked for for creating jobs all over the state to COLLEGE TOWNS which don't need it.

We have nothing to feel superior to CA voters about.

The solution to all state budgets is the following.
In this example. The state is getting money from the two sources, (1) 40% from fixed taxes and (2) 60% from variable taxes. The fixed is from property taxes. The variable taxes are from private state taxes.

So it is simple. Make all budgets the following.
They get their money this way (1) 40% is fixed, (2) 60% is variable. So if the receipts from variable taxes drops their variable budget drops the same percentage.
That way, they could not spend more that what they take in.

18 POINT ACTION PLAN: Border Violators

1) Close all US borders to illegal entry forthwith by any and all means possible, including military presence.

2) Maintain legitimate immigration levels at modest annual level with requirements that immigrants be employable or sufficiently wealthy for self-support if they do not intend to work, proficient in basic English and willing to be assimilated into American culture and language. All applicants shall provide prints, photos and DNA samples.

3) Legal immigration shall be awarded to individuals on a lottery basis, wherein all countries are given equal status in the immigration lottery, without regards to color or economic plight of originating nation.

4) Individuals of Islamic faith (muslims) from any country shall be denied immigration privileges or entry into the US. Christians and Jews from muslim countries fleeing religious persecution shall receive accelerated immigration privileges.

5) Detain all border violators, taking photos, prints and DNA samples of said violator while at the same time, checking for out standing warrants. If no warrants are outstanding, return border violators to home country within 20 days via commercial airline and submit cost of such action, including processing and housing costs for said violator, to country of origin. If costs are not paid within 30 days, reduce any and all aid to said country by a like amount.

6) Should any country from which a border violator originates not currently receive any aid from the US, the Justice Department shall be authorized to seize or secure liens on assets owned, managed or registered to that country to the full extent of the obligation.

7) Establish new Guest Worker Visa (GWV) category, renewable every 6 months, for unskilled labor positions wherein all applicants shall provide prints, photos and DNA samples. Work permitted of such applicants shall be limited to one of several categories, including childcare, lawn/gardening, restaurant staff, cleaning and the like. Families of GWV workers are not permitted to enter US, nor will the birth of a child to one of GWV status confer citizenship to either parent or child.

8) Any violation of civil or criminal laws shall result in the forfeiture of the GWV and immediate return to originating country.

9) GWV holders shall be prohibited from claiming unemployment benefits, welfare support or free medical service.

10) The originating country of all GWV holders shall be responsible for any uninsured loss caused by the GWV, including emergency medical claims and/or claims resulting from illegal actions committed while in the US.

11) Companies who hire GWV holders shall submit to the Immigration Dept the name and GWV number of that individual, along with a description of employment tasks. Companies shall be subject to fines and penalty that fail to report employment of GWV workers, or hire border violators. GWV workers shall be paid with check, having income tax withheld. GWV workers shall not be subject to unemployment tax because they are not eligible to receive unemployment compensation.

12) Border violators, or any non-citizen not possessing a valid visa, detained by local police for any reason shall be turned over to border control officials for immediate deportation action, except if they face criminal charges in other jurisdictions.

13) GWV workers shall be prohibited for voting in local, state and federal elections.

14) Border Violators shall NOT be afforded the rights enjoyed by American citizens, as guaranteed under the constitution.

15) Public education (at institutions supported by taxpayer dollars) at any level (pre-school, kindergarten through the university level,) shall NOT be available to Border Violators (or children of Border Violators) and schools that enroll such individuals shall be subject to penalties.

16) Foreign Students (F/S) (individuals admitted to the U.S. for the purpose of attending any educational facility,) private institution or public (i.e. supported by taxpayer dollars,) must have valid student visas, such visas being in force only if the F/S attends school full-time. F/S shall be required to pay tuition, housing and related costs such that all their educational costs are fully reimbursed to the institution attended. The originating country shall pay for any and all loss caused by students while on U.S. soil.

17) Border Violators seeking emergency medical treatment shall provide pictures, fingerprints and DNA samples along with country of origin, and shall be treated, then incarcerated until information provided can be verified. Originating country shall bear the costs of medical treatment and confinement.

18) Children born in the U.S. to border violators, illegal aliens or of foreign nationals in the U.S. for any reason (including temporary visitor, school or work visas,) shall not be eligible for citizenship as circumstances of birth, nor shall the parents or parent’s family members (relatives) be conferred U.S. citizenship as a result of such births.

OK. Where have they been all these years? The answer is OUTVOTED! California was turned into a socialist grab bag and the conservatives didn't stop it because they did not have the votes.

No, no, no and once again NO!

Perception, both in and out of the state, has made that a reality. It is simply UNTRUE. CA is actually a conservative state, but since both sides have taken your stance to be gospel-it has indeed become a socialists grab bag. The CA Republican is a laughingstock. They lose because they think they will find votes in the "center" whatever the heck that is. They dither, they talk out of both sides of their mouths, or they simply don't articulate the conservative viewpoint. Can anyone say Ahnold Buffet? In the rest of the state, outside of San Fran, this suppresses the Independent conservative vote. "Why vote at all?" so many say.

But the proof in the pudding is in the ballot initiatives. No double talking, no trust in a candidate, no BS. Just Law. Take a good long look at our most recent ballot initiatives, and you tell me-do conservatives not have votes, or do RINOs not have votes?

1994 - Proposition #184: Three-strikes, life imprisonment for repeat felons.
1994 - Proposition #187: Cut off state funds for Illegal Aliens.
1996 - Proposition #209: Ended statewide Affirmative Action
1998 - Proposition #227: Ended bilingual education
2000 - Proposition #22: Defined marriage as one man - one woman.
