Illegal immigration into the United States threatens the future of the nation, a Colorado congressman told Mesa County Republicans on Friday. U.S. Rep. Tom Tancredo, R-Centennial, drew two standing ovations from about 100 Republicans, even though he acknowledged his stand on illegal immigration runs counter to that of the party's leader, President Bush. Forcing a national debate over illegal immigration transcends party loyalty though, he said. At issue, he said, isn't so much whether the United States will have a Balkanized future, but whether it will have a future as a nation at all. Illegal immigration combined with "the cult of multiculturalism" and the welfare state threaten to undermine and bankrupt American institutions, he said. Tancredo joked that he actually was on his way to California to get in on the governor's race. In an exclusive interview with The Daily Sentinel, however, he said the stakes actually are a bit higher than a governor's race. He has visited California on several occasions with the hope of forcing illegal immigration to a top-level issue in the 2004 presidential race. One vehicle, he said, might be a referendum in the nation's most populous state that would limit access to any government services to citizens or legal residents only. "Even if I'm 180 degrees wrong," he said, "the subject at least deserves a debate." Tancredo said he advocates securing the nation's southern border using a 20,000-strong Border Patrol combined with high-tech equipment to prevent illegal border crossings. A guest-worker program might be in order for industries that couldn't otherwise find employees, but no such program could work without a secure border, he said. It's particularly important to secure the border, he said, because it isn't used only by Mexicans seeking employment. "Huge numbers" of Middle-Easterners frequently cross the border, often helped by Mexican drug gangs who charge $30,000 for the use of their expertise, he said. "I don't blame them," he said of illegal immigrants looking north for opportunity, but he noted the Mexican government relies heavily on money sent by illegal immigrants to their relatives to bolster the economy. That amounts to about $10 billion a year, a third of the Mexican gross domestic product, he said. Tancredo urged the Mesa County Republicans to insist that all candidates be held to account on illegal-immigration issues. Even if offices such as city council or county commissioner seem to have little to do with illegal immigration, candidates still should be forced to take a position. "Get them on record," he said.
Tell that to George Bush, who restored welfare benefits to immigrants, cut under Clinton.
There is no limit to the number of honest, hard working, productive and inspired individuals that are welcome in America. No limit, ever. We've got room for hundreds of millions more
You must vacation in Calcutta. I wonder how many share your utopian vision of a half-billion or billion people here consigning the America of wide open spaces to the dust bin of history.
[They may] speak foreign languages and worship in their own place and ways.
So you're cool with replacing our former nearly-universal use of English with an assortment of languages (since diversity is our greatest strength), and good to go too, with a Judeo Christian society being supplanted here by a growing Islamic one (why not, its doing wonders for France)?
Our Judeo Christian morals, ethics and vitues are embued in our secular blueprint, the American Constitution. American Muslims embrace the empowering concepts and responsibilties that underly the Constitution, they don't have to worship Allah in any way but their own.
Bush said legally resident immigrants, who pay taxes to fund public entitlements for citizens, should have access to them when need arises. What's wrong with that? They're paying for the service, they have a right to use them when need arises.
Those severely wounded Marines from Mexico and Guatamala who took their oaths of citizenship from President Bush while recovering in Walter Reed are FAR MORE American than some fifth generation white trash screaming at each other on Jerry Sprenger.
1. English proficiency is declining in this country.
2. Immigrated Islam has sprinkled terror cells and financing sources all over this country. The head of CAIR, wouldn't rule out the USA as an Islamic state.
3. What's wrong with aliens getting welfare, besides the obvious importation of poverty, is that they and their "sponsors" sign pledges it won't happen before they get the visa. And how someone's elderly mother off the boat from Jamaica has "paid for" her SSI is beyond me.
4. Well-chosen anecdotes aside, a comparison of overall voting patterns, military participation rates, and plain old patriotism leaves your "white trash" (white Southerners/Appalachians) looking pretty good compared with the rest of the country, not to mention with Hispanic immigrants and their progeny.
As I understand it, the failure began when Gray Davis became governor. The appeal began during Pete Wilson's term and was scheduled for the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals. Before the appeal was to be argued, Davis took over, and he declined to pursue it. Instead, Davis arranged a phony "mediation" or "arbitration," whereby the only negotiators Davis invited were the anti-187 people; nobody supporting 187 was included (unfortunately for us).
There was a recall attempt based on Davis' failure to uphold the will of CA voters on 187, but the attempt, like the thirty or so recall attempts on various CA governors, failed to collect enough signatures.
I don't know whether the appeal can be resurrected or why Davis had the authority to stop the appeal, although Lockyer probably agreed with Davis; maybe some Freeper lawyers can enlighten us all about the appeals process?
I hear ya. But we'd have to change Amendment XIV for that to happen.
How can I be peaceful?
I'm coming from the bottom
Watched my daddy scream peace while the other man shot him
1. Get rid of government subsidies for offshore investment of US companies. OPIC is the first such program which should go but support of World Bank programs that subsidize the outflow of Capital would be another.
2. Use tariffs on those nations which are engaged in unfair trade practices such as currency manipulation (China and India for example), those nations which refuse to open their markets to US products (China for example with its 50% tariffs on US consumer goods and non tariff barriers), those nations that subsidize competition to American Industry (airbus for example) and those nations which have slave conditions for their workers.
3. Use tariffs and other means to prevent the relocation of jobs offshore that are essential to the national defense. If necessary take control of the company seeking to export vital technology or industry by means of eminent domain (No I do not like this last option and I will only defend its use as an absolute last resort like say in the case of rare earth magnets essential to smart bomb technology).
4. An immediate end to guest worker programs. If people wish to come to the USA to work and make a life let them immigrate according to the rules.
5 Provide economic development zones where the corporate income tax is zero for operations within these zones. In order to operate in this zone a company must agree to only purchase American components if available and employ only American citizens or legal immigrants in these operations. These economic development zones shall be eventually be expanded to include every bit of every state once the benefits are shown I would like them to be totally implemented immediately but I realize that may be overreaching.
6. Scale back unnecessary regulation including the tort system. Institute a cap on punitive damages, limits on class action suits, and limits on liability to the actual percentage of liability with no plaintiff able to collect if said plaintiff was involved in the commission of a felony at the time of the alleged tort or was more than 49% negligent in the alleged tort. Note that the loser in a frivolous lawsuit shall pay the attorney fees of the winner. There are many other regulatory structures that also need to be included that need to be included such as repealing the Family leave mandate, getting rid of OSHA etc.
7. Increase the domestic content in purchases by the Department of defense and give absolute preference in non-domestic content to proven allies of the USA over say the French or Germans. The only reason any content for DOD purchase may come from non US allies is that content is not available elsewhere and is essential.
8. Do not allow expense involved in moving operations overseas to be included in business expenses under the IRS code.
9. Prosecute for perjury anyone who has made a false statement in order to employ an H1B or L1 visa worker. I will be lenient on the actual perjurer if he/she was ordered to make this false statement and he/she provides testimony to aid in the conviction of the person ordering the perjury. Just because a person is a CEO does not give them a pass on criminal behavior.
10. Prosecute anyone who orders the transfer of vital defense technology or funds a R&D project that could be of use to our military overseas except to strong allies of the USA. Make the necessary enhancements to our espionage laws so that continued support or funding of any R&D in a nation whose government has threatened the USA is guilty of espionage. The UK and Australia come to mind as meeting these criteria for being eligible for transfer of technology first. There will be other nations and a gradation of what can be transferred to which specific nation. Under no circumstances may technology be transferred to any nation whose government has threatened the USA within five years without a complete change of government or specific exemption from Congress and the administration.
11. Deport all illegal aliens immediately and take measures that prevent the entry of any more illegal aliens. Fine [and sanction] all companies knowingly employing illegal aliens. Criminal sanctions should be imposed on anyone helping an illegal alien stay in the USA in violation of our laws.
12. Decrease the punishing levels of taxation on companies and eliminate the double taxation on corporate dividends. See effects of item 5 for how minimal this will be if item 5 covers the entire USA. Eliminate all IRS provisions that inhibit free use of independent contractors by businesses for example section 1706.
13. Eliminate the minimum wage so that the workers can be paid based on productivity. Overtime compensation will remain the same but instead of 150% of the "wage" the worker would receive 150% of the production pay. If one through 13 are enacted, #14 becomes an irrelevancy as no one will be working for that low a wage.
Question: Who'd be on board to support this?
Really? The BP has shifted the migration well to the east of California with a fence and strict enforcement. If this country were serious about border control, we could cut illegal immigration by 90 percent or so by a mixture of a continuous fence, stepped-up patrols and sanctions on employers who hire illegals.
But you're not here to debate the matter of controlling illegal immigration. You're here to call anyone who is opposed to the official neglect of illegal immigration a xenophone or a racist because you are in favor of unlimited immigration. As such, you are an extremely dishonest poster who pushes the limits of the posting guidelines on this forum regarding personal attacks, and are someone who routinely gets threads shunted off to the Smokey Backroom with your flame-baiting.
Because, after all, dealing with this matter does not involve having legislative agenda, like you are demanding from others. Dealing with this issue can be done by simply enforcing the laws already on the books - so you are creating a red herring the size of a whale with your rants here.
Well you might not care about things like population density, endless suburban sprawl, lack of water and the like but lots of people do. To say "no limit ever" is absurd. Would you like to live a country with the population density like that of India? I would not and consider preventing that a totally legitimate role for the Federal government. Libertarian philosophy is a wonderful thing, but needs harnessing to reality to be useful. Unlimited endless immigration is not a plan, it's a sophmore B.S. session topic.
