Just curious...what has changed so much in California to make you want to pick up and move.

What are the main things you and your dad consider important (in a state)? For example - low taxes, scenic areas, beaches, jobs, weather, cities...?

I'd would say North Dakota. The weather su*ks,the economy su*ks,it is boring as hell,but the people are OK.Hey, but it's cheap if you don't mind going insane. Byebye

You might want to consider Tyler, Texas. It has excellent medical facilities which might appeal to your father as he grows older. It's the rose capital of Texas, and the scenery is gorgeous.

It's not that far from Dallas if you want some big city excitement, but it's small enough that traffic isn't a problem.

Texas doesn't have an income tax (neither does Tennessee - what's wrong with Tennessee? We have heat and snow).

Colorado is nice (great Governor - you could go from THE worst to one of the best) but parts of it are little too dirt-worshippy for my tastes.

You really should throw middle Tennessee in the mix of places you are considering. Great economy, less traffic, distinct change of seasons, major league sports, close to a lot of great places to visit, great hunting and fishing, reasonable level of arts and all kinds of music and Democrats are more conservative than most of California's Republicans. Now if we could just be like Texas and find a way to make them leave the state (without letting them back in).

The job market in Texas is very bad, right now and real estate is depressed. If your skills involve computers, Texas is not the place to go.

What I want to avoid is the 'lib' areas - I know, all of the states have 'em. Seems most of these areas in other states being recommended to me by Cali brokers are what I call 'Birkenstock Zones' and I want to avoid them. Common ones that pop up are: Austin, Denver, Boulder, and parts of Houston. Are these rumors correct?

The "Free State" state hasn't been selected yet has it? If the selection is due soon, you could wait for it and think about moving there. A Free State is a provocative idea.

Suggestion - Look at all the Southeastern CO, south and east of the Springs - Depending on your skillset, you may find some of those smaller towns are really great.

Thinking of La Junta, Trinidad, etc.

Why leave? I just got one of these cheesy "constituent letters" the other day from the odious Sam Farr of Monterey. Seems he wants to put 6000 homes on the grounds of the old Ft. Ord for "affordable housing". And of course, preference will go to people who live and work in Monterey County (or, I suppose, Santa Cruz County). And guess who that would be? Right. Illegals who work in Salinas and Watsonville.

So Mr. Farr and his buddies will soon be giving free houses to the citizens of Mexico, on the grounds of what was one of the largest and most important Army bases in America.

All you gotta do is change your last name to something like Rodriguez or Martinez, and I'm sure they'll give you a nice new home near the beautiful Monterey beach. But not if your name is Smith or Jones. Maybe you could get a Matricula Consular with the appropriate surname, I'm sure they would take that.

What part of California are you from, and where do you live now?

The question is relevant because the answer will determine where you will be most comfortable culturally as well as economically and politically. If you're from the Central Valley, you'll probably be most comfortable in Texas, if you're from Northern California or the Sierras, you'd probably prefer Colorado. Southern California is a toss-up.

Many in the southern counties are pushing for a state income tax ---- and the way property taxes are going ---what's the difference? We're paying either way for massive handout programs ---- they're pushing to raise the tax for the local county hospital 32% --- it's already a huge chunk of money we pay ---and it's not even for Americans.

Re: Free State Project-- Good suggestion! I'm in Florida (which rocks!) But the Free State Project is underway. They have reached the goal of 5,000 and the voting ballots have been sent out already. Right now, Montana and NH are the frontrunners.

I know nothing about Colorado, but Austin, parts of Houston and Dallas/Fort Worth are very very commie.

Oddly enough most folks in East Texas are very conservative yellow dog democrats. Go figure.
