Fresno residents and community leaders, outraged by an e-mail message in which City Council Member - Jerry Duncan wished he had a "dirty bomb" to kill every liberal in Fresno, called Thursday for his resignation, recall or reprimand.

I don't argue that point, but as a politician he should know better than make such statements in an e-mail. It's like putting up a sign "liberals, please attack me".

I don't think he should resign, he should apologize and in the future review anything he writes from the perspective : "can liberals attack me for this".

It wasn't a threat. It was free speech in a free society. Please note that the more liberal members on the City Council may have been given advance warning so they could delete their emails, making them look like saints (which trust me, they are not).

FWIW, here's my take:

1. Duncan has the right to say what he wants.
2. Duncan doesn't have the right to say what he wants without criticism.
3. If a public official says or writes that he wants to kill his opponents, that's not smart.
4. We'll never hear the end of this. For the next twenty years, this will make the rounds as "typical" of the sorts of things conservatives say. It will be like when Rush Limbaugh called Chelsea Clinton the White House dog. He apologized for it, never repeated it, and it was ten years ago. But every Democratic activist seems to remember it as all as they need to know about Rush Limbaugh.

But you might say "in the big picture, isn't Duncan a pretty minor figure to get that kind of notoriety?" It doesn't matter. When I lived in Pennsylvania, we had a State representative named Stephen Friend. Friend was very pro-life.

He once said something to the effect that it was very difficult for a woman who was raped to get pregnant because of the hormones a woman secrets during rape. The liberals couldn't just say "One state rep who doesn't know biology. Big deal." Even years after the fact, they were villifying Friend.

"Set-up" in this way: Someone alerts "The Bee" about City Council Members' emails; then the liberal Bee gets their dirty minds in gear; meanwhile the moles had warned the liberal members of the City Council to delete their questionable emails. Voila! Jerry Duncan is the victim of a "Bee" sting. Not the first time a conservative Republican got stung, either.

Thanks for your "take" on this. I can't say I disagree with you. However, imagine this. If the Republicans would rally 'round Duncan at this moment in time, perhaps they could stave off future reprecussions. (I wish FreeRepublic had spell check, don't you?)

I agree 100%. There are ways of expressing dissent without making a "threat". If you make a joke about a bomb or terrorists while passing through airport security, they don't take it as a joke. If you make a joke about killing the president, the Secret Service does not take it as a joke. Even it if was a joke, that doesn't mean that people won't take it seriously. I'm glad that he is a patriot, but I still think that this was a stupid thing to say and even stupider to put in a documentable format (email).
