I work in a bldg with NO windows. We have lightning storms almost weekly which plunge us into total darkness. I keep a mag light in the desk and one in all cars.

I grew up in blackouts. Every Sunday, they refused to show the Dolphins home games. It sucked! But now I'm ready!

Preparedness is a way of life. What's so difficult? A year's food storage, a few weeks of drinking water, some means to have light and heat. The ability to defend your family and home. Everybody ought to do it. Sooner or later, when the boy cries 'wolf' it's because there really is a wolf.

Ready.
Generator and plenty of gas for 3-4 days. Enough to run fridge, lights, TV, etc. A furnace in winter (gas heat).
Plenty of batteries.
Well prepared for self-protection. (ahem)
Plenty of food in the house.
55 gallon water barrel, another I'm about to set up.

Central Delaware, where I lived for more than 20 years, was notorious for power outages.
We always had candles, oil lamps, extra oil and flashlights.
As to personal safety, I avoided being on the road, because people don't know how to act without traffic lights. 2 large dogs and a loaded weapon also are necessities!!!

I fell for Y2K hook line and sinker and I kept up the preps. I have everything still except the 300 gallons of water.

I'm ready for anything, but nothing ever comes.
Oh, well, guess I'll go downstairs and go for a swim.

I wish. Blockbuster has a good deal on that right now, too!

We're pretty much set here. We have a 20,000-gallon source of pure water and our motorhome has a beefy generator we've already used to power the basics in the house the last time we had a power failure (lightning struck a neighbor's tree, which fell on HIS lines, which popped the service drop's fuse, darkening 8 homes on our court, including ours) than lasted 9 hours.
And we always have my pantry well-stocked.

We live out in the boonies with electric co-op power that is frequently disabled by falling trees, etc. We simply get out the camping gear (including both electric and gas/propane lanterns) -- and pretend we're on vacation. Quite enjoyable, actually...

All that, and since our home is all electric, we keep four propane tanks, three of which are always full - maybe barbecued scrambled eggs would be smoky, but a helluva a lot tastier than raw...

I lived at Ground Zero where Hurricane Andrew hit. One week with no power, 2 weeks with questionable power. 90+ Degrees, very high humidity. I've always got flashlights around the house. The worst part of it all is trying to sleep with no A/C, that was tough...
