Rare Moose Triplets (With Pics!)
Aftenposten ^ | recently | Trond Thorvalsen

RARE MOOSE TRIPLETS: Moose are common in Norway, but spotting a female with triplets is nothing short of a sensation. Photographer Trond Thorvaldsen spent nearly two weeks wandering in a forest north of Fredrikstad and was rewarded with these rare shots. Only 20 percent of moose mothers give birth to twins, according to retired professor Knut Solbraa, while triplets account for one in 100 births.

FOLLOW THE LEADER: There's no doubt who's boss in this family, with moose calves dependent on their mothers during their first year of life. Here, they obediently follow their mama on a warm summer evening.

SUPPER TIME: Photographer Thorvaldsen's patience also yielded some rare shots of the calves nursing. He said he was careful to keep his distance and avoid making the mother anxious.

TIME TO GO: After enjoying their snack, the three little moose followed their mother back into the deep forest. Photographer Thorvaldsen won't reveal exactly where he came cross the moose family, to guard their privacy.

Years ago, we stopped at a rest area near the Tetons. In the distance was a moose with two young. She was devouring a large bush. Some foolish folk decided to try to get younger to get a good picture. We left before any blood flowed.

Actually that's a lesbian moose, and the triplets were adopted.

Refreshing to see those pictures. Better than the drivel about Cinton, Bush, Rumsfeld and others.
