Kolbe explains bill, but doesn't find support at SV town hall
BY BILL HESS 14 August 2003
Sierra Vista Herald/Review SIERRA VISTA, ARIZONA -- U.S. Rep. Jim Kolbe said he needs support for a new guest-worker program to end the flow of illegal immigrants into the United States, but he did not get much encouragement from people who attended his town hall Wednesday night. One woman angrily and emotionally demanded that the federal government close the border now and protect her and others who are living in fear. Her voice rising, the woman said she does not sleep at night because the flow of illegal immigrants goes by her home in the Hereford area. She also said her property is being trashed. She is afraid and has purchased a gun for protection, the woman said before leaving the meeting. Kolbe, R-Ariz., began his town hall in the Sierra Vista City Hall council chambers by talking about the proposed bill he, U.S. Rep. Jeff Flake, R-Ariz., and U.S. Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., recently introduced in Congress. The congressman told the nearly 100 people at the event that the majority of illegal immigrants entering the United States from Mexico are "coming here for a job." In the future U.S. job market, U.S. citizens will be taking on employment in the high-end paying positions when the baby boomer generation retires in the next few years, the congressman said. Lower-paying employment, including service industry jobs such as those in restaurants and hotels, will have to be filled by migrants, he said. The proposed bill will provide an avenue for people throughout the world to apply for jobs that Americans will not do, Kolbe said. The bill "recognizes reality" by legally allowing workers to enter the United States with a special visa. It also gives those here illegally an opportunity to become legal in the sense they can stay and work, the congressman said. Kolbe said it is not amnesty for those who in the country illegally, just as he has said in recent meetings when he has discussed the proposed bill. John Harrington of Elgin said the federal government needs to go after the businesses that hire illegal immigrants. Kolbe said it is not proper to make business owners be immigration law enforcement officers because they do not have the ability to determine if documents being presented are real or fraudulent. After the meeting, Harrington said Kolbe did not answer his question, which leads him to believe the bill is a bad one that should not be passed by Congress. Greedy business owners want the "slave labor" coming across the border. They will not hire legally if the bill is passed because they will have to pay migrants more money, Harrington said. To solve the problem, Harrington said officials need to go after the money people on both sides of the border -- those who hire the illegal immigrants on the U.S. side and those who are paid on the Mexican side to get illegal immigrants into the United States. Jim O'Donogue of Sierra Vista said that because of the federal government's inaction, "the gates are open and the horses are gone." Kolbe said he would take any suggestions to make the bill better and ideas on how to control the border. O'Donogue suggested that the border be strengthened by using unarmed retired military people "stationed every 200 or 300 yards." The volunteers would only need cell phones to call for law enforcement support when a group of illegal immigrants is seen crossing the border. O'Donogue added that he would volunteer for 12 hours a week, and the only pay he would want is a "baloney and cheese sandwich." Margaret Stephens of Hereford said that unless action is taken to control the border, which doesn't mean coming up with a new visa process for those seeking jobs, "this will not be the United States of America, it will be the United States of Mexico." She added that illegal immigrants demand more and more once they come into the United States. "An illegal is no better than a person robbing a store," she said.

The congressman is a bald faced liar and a despicable RINO who ought to be recalled.
Kolbe said it is not proper to make business owners be immigration law enforcement officers because they do not have the ability to determine if documents being presented are real or fraudulent.
Then give them the way to verify docs, and when they cheat, seize their businesses and toss them in prison. How does this moron Kolbe keep getting elected?
Kolbe said he would take any suggestions to make the bill better and ideas on how to control the border.
Mr. Kolbe, put the military on the damned border and toss out these illegal alien barnacles, you idiot. I can't see how Kolbe can try to palm this crap off on the Americans he's sworn to protect with a straight face. This guy has been a snake-oil salesman for years.

I think you mean: Bump!
Whatever... It's the thought that counts.
Yeah...he does look just a little bit irate. I'm sure that's just a small taste of the vitriol that Kolbe got last night. The trouble is, even if every voter in his district in Cochise County voted against him, Tucson would still cast enough votes to keep him in office. Redistricting has left Cochise County and specifically Sierra Vista completely politically powerless. We can scream and yell but our votes count for squat the way they've drawn the lines. Hmmmm...I wonder why someone would do something like that?
Doesn't mean they won't continue to try and shove it down our throats anyway, but at least there is strong opposition, which might slow or even stop it.
Barely, but you're right, massive opposition did have an effect last time around. The Republicans in Congress put a stop to his wish to extend 245(i). Apparently he hasn't given up, and so neither can we. Any form of amnesty is suicide for both the country and the GOP.
Did you hear what Kolbe said to Tancredo when Tancredo pointed out to him his bill is in effect an amnesty for illegal aliens? It was similar to: "sssshhh, don't say that, or we'll never get it passed."
In other words, yes, it's an amnesty, but let's keep quiet about it, or call it something else otherwise we won't be able to spoonfeed this down people's mouths so easily. The man definitely needs to be recalled and retired for the good of the country.
I think I explained some of this earlier in this thread. We've tried to elect someone else. Last year we ran retired LTC Jim Behnke against him in the Republican Primary. I was so impassioned about tossing Kolbe out, I ended up as Behnke's Assistant Campaign Chairman. For one, we were swimming against the current and the Republican establishment didn't want to see Kolbe defeated. Heck, there were people here on FR who knew full well what a freakin' RINO Kolbe is, but they would not support Behnke because they were yellow bastards afraid that somehow Behnke couldn't win the General Election against one of the lamest Democrats you've ever seen.
The district lines are drawn such that we have no political power down here. Everyone in Kolbe's district in Cochise County could vote for his opponent and Kolbe would still win with the votes he'd get in Tucson.
One of the primary reasons that Kolbe stays in office are the retirees whose Pavlovian response to Kolbe's Social Security/Medicare roadshows keep them pulling the lever for the corrupt RINO. He's a loser on the immigration issue but Tucson and Green Valley don't care. Just keep those checks coming. His border position has lead to millions of jobs lost to Americans, closed trauma centers, violent crime, trampled sensitive environmental areas, national security nightmares, and people who live in fear in their homes but Tucson doesn't care because Kolbe is sooooo "progressive" that he thinks killing babies in the womb or just outside the womb (see his votes against the PBA ban) is a perfectly good idea.
When I saw Tom Tancredo here in town in February I told him that since we lack any legitimate representation down here he's our only representative in Congress. He said that I wasn't the only one who has told him that.
Kolbe's got go to! But the only way to make that happen is 1.)we need someone from Tucson who people know and respect and 2.)he needs a lot of money to go up against Kolbe's campaign warchest of millions of dollars. Tell me who that is and I'll go work for him just like I worked for Behnke.
Excuse me, gay jim, is it proper to make hospitals give these deadbeats free medical care, to make the taxpayers provide their living through welfare, wic, foodstamps, etc?
Another fine example of taking money from people under threat of arrest, and distributing it to the prefered group of the politician, in the name of making us all equal, equally POOR.
