Tom DeLay's Web Site
U.S. House Majority Leader ^ | 8-14-03 | Tom DeLay

Here is the photo that dominates the home page of House Majority Leader Tom DeLay. This is not a parody. You can click the link and see for yourself. Notice the 2 flags behind the Capitol. Which country are we living in here, and where lie the loyalties of our leaders?

he's showing a drawing of part of a flag of a foreign country, not flying it over the Capital building.

It's a photo in which he has superimposed the Israeli flag over the Capital building.

If he'd just talked to the Japanese Diet, it would be the rising sun I expect.

In that case, show me an example. If this is standard procedure, then there must be hundreds of similar examples. I'll bet you can find the flags of dozens of countries flying over the capitol on official US government web sites. I'll be waiting to see them.

he is not 3rd in line for the Presidency

Check out the dozen posts that beat you to it.

I think the idea here is one of peoplehood. The essence of being American flows from the heritage of the Jews, and later from (particularly American) Christians - both with their senses of messianic expectation.

The allusion, I believe, is in recognition of that shared heritage and destiny, and the hopes and prayers for its continuance through One God.

Let the world take note.

I fail to see where this image places Israeli interests above ours.

It's an image.

You may quibble with all the money we give them (I won't) but this image obsession is a petard.

Actually it's a montage, but whether drawing or photo, or some of each. (I'd bet on the flags not being a photo), the Capital is superimposed over the two flags, not the other way 'round.

Should have checked out the website. After reading post #9, I understood the context of the webpic.

*gasp* You mean DeLay, a politician, disagrees with another politician? I have no problem with DeLay disagreeing with President Bush, even on his official government website, even when speaking to Israel's Knesset. President Bush may indeed feel otherwise and if so, I'm sure DeLay will hear about it. I happen to agree with DeLay regarding President Bush's overly ambitious plan. I don't think it's in America's best interest.

I think the way it was presented led to jumping to an incorrect conclusion. I did at first.

It places them side-by-side. It looks like Tom DeLay is a man who "has two masters."

this image obsession is a petard

Hoisted by my own petard?

This is disingenuous. Pres. Bush is not just another politician. As president, he has responsibility for foreign policy. Bush and DeLay are in the same Republican party. If DeLay wants to lead Congress in a different direction from the president's foreign policy, then isn't that a major issue? I bet you don't take this attitude towards Democrats that undermine the president's Mideast policies.

I did not say that. I recall being told that when I first started here. I had to look it up..lol

Now, I'm going to be candid. Do you have an issue with Israel or our relationship with her?

I think that is at the root of this quandry....and I'm not labeling you as anything. It's perfectly fine to have discord there. I simply do not share it.

I guess I don't think this is some kind of whacko agenda. I just don't like seeing a foreign flag flying over the US Capitol. Why is that so strange? To me, the intended symbolism seems obvious. I'm not reading anything into this that DeLay wasn't trying to communicate when he posted that picture.

I don't have an issue with Israel as one more client state from the Mideast, along with dozens of other foreign countries that may currently be allies. I have an issue with putting the interests of Israel and the US side by side, as though the US government is also the Israeli government.

The flag of Israel bothers you huh?

I gather you don't care much for the Jews either, hmmmm?

I pray our country NEVER deserts Israel!

It bothers me when it's flying over the US Capitol building on the web site of the US House Majority Leader. Flying it in Israel is fine, but this is the United States.

Typical smear tactic of those with neither ideas nor scruples.

This is off-topic compared to my usual posts, but I posted this image earlier and so far everyone who has responded has had no problem with the image of the US Capital equally serving two countries. My opinion has been very much in the minority. So I am pinging the usual suspects to ask, "Am I the only one who is disturbed by this image of the Israeli flag flying over the US Capital building?"

I find this to be powerful symbolism. Compare it to Congress offering legislation to outlaw burning the American flag. It's because of the symbolism. Flying the flag of a foreign country over the US Capitol is highly symbolic, representing the goals of the US House Majority Leader.
