Kosovo gunmen attack swimming teenagers
13/08/2003 - 15:21:35
Gunmen sprayed bullets on teenagers swimming in a Kosovo river today, killing at least one and injuring five others.
The gunfire was directed against children swimming, and all those hit were youths, said Derek Chappell, a UN police spokesman in Kosovo. Chappell said.
A Serb teenager died and four Serb teenagers and one ethnic Albanian girl were injured, some of them seriously, he added.
He did not confirm a report by Belgrade television that said two children had died, one on the scene and one en route to a hospital.
UN spokesman Andrea Angeli said the attackers had been hiding in the bush near the river.
They were prepared and waiting for the youngsters, he said, adding the attackers used AK-47 automatic rifles.
Belgrades independent B92 radio station identified one fatal victim as 18-year-old Milos Jovovic.
The kids were swimming and playing on the beach when an attacker sneaked to about 50 yards from them and opened fire, Ratko Manojlovic, a local Serb, told the radio.
Two of those injured were in serious condition and were set to be flown to a German military hospital for treatment, Angeli said.
The teenagers were swimming in the Bistrica River, near the ethnic Albanian village of Zahac which neighbours the Serb enclave of Gorazdevac.
The area is 50 miles from the provincial capital Pristina.
Natos top commander in Kosovo, General Lieutenant Fabio Mini, condemned the attack and called it a bad signal for the possibility for Kosovo to achieve tolerance.
This is not Kosovo that we want, he said.
Police had no suspects and had sealed off the area to investigate.
Kosovo has been administered by the United Nations and Nato-led peacekeepers since June 1999, after the alliances 78 day bombing campaign halted Serb forces crackdown on separatist ethnic Albanians.
Since the war, Kosovos Serb minority has been targeted by ethnic Albanian extremists in revenge attacks for atrocities committed during the conflict.
Two young Serbs die in Kosovo shooting
13.08.2003 - 17:45 PRISTINA, Serbia and Montenegro (Reuters) - At least one attacker has opened fire on Serbs bathing in a river in western Kosovo, killing two teenagers and injuring six other youngsters, officials in the U.N.-run province says.
"Gunfire was directed at a group of children swimming in the river on a hot summer afternoon," said U.N. police spokesman Derek Chappell. "It is the act of a madman."
The shooting was the worst attack against members of the beleaguered Serb minority in the mainly Albanian province since a family of three were killed in the town of Obilic near Kosovo's main city of Pristina in June.
It took place near Gorazdevac, a village populated by Serbs who often live in enclaves protected by NATO in case of attack by Kosovo Albanian militants.
U.N. officials said one Serb male was killed on the spot while another died later in hospital. Among the injured, one was an Albanian female while the others were believed to be Serb males. Chappell said police had so far made no arrests.
Kosovo was placed under U.N.-led administration in 1999 after NATO's 11-week bombing campaign to end Serb repression of Albanians when Slobodan Milosevic ruled Yugoslavia.
Fearing revenge attacks, about 180,000 Serbs fled Kosovo. Many of those remaining live in enclaves protected by NATO peacekeepers, or in the Serb-dominated north of the province.
Serbian media, including the official Tanjug news agency, described Wednesday's victims as children. But Belgrade's B92 radio said the dead person was an 18-year-old male.
Chappell said he did not know the victims' exact ages but they were all youngsters. "It is a very confusing scene."

Gunmen sprayed bullets That is how the story begins. "Gunman." Who are they? Ooooooohhh! They mean Islamic Terrorists! Well, at least they didn't use the dreaded un-PC "T" word there.
"sprayed bullets." Why, did they need painting? Oooooohhh! They fired weapons at people.

Is US not still in Kosovo protecting islamo-terrorists?
To: RussianConservative
Reduced force but still there. I think there is some limited Russian force too? Stack in Kosovo is what it is. Too much political luggage is packed in that place. The entire West, after Clinton and whoever was advising them at that time, were working on their own destruction. It hurts them to admit that they were the bosos who put down the dam and almost drowned in the flood. The outcome is by no means certain even today.

They sure are and the Albanian Kosovars are running "Albanca" to Europe per usual. 15 Albanian familes control the heroin trade and distribution. They keep the KLA in modern weponry and money. The Serbs can be murdered at will. Nobody cares

Albanian Muslim terrorists Clinton allied scums!! Sub-human islamist monsters. Kill them all until they stand down. It's the only sensible response from a civilized world. When will the civilized world get on with the business at hand?

>>Off the topic, but why the phrase "ethnic Albanians" and "ethnic Albanian village"? Why not Albanians?
Because they weren't in the country of Albania, and the reporters weren't talking about Albanian citizens.
I want to know why the shooters weren't identified as Muslim terrorists.
