SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Gov. Gray Davis, after months without filling a single judicial vacancy, began churning out appointments the day the election to recall him was certified, state records show. Davis has appointed 15 judges since July 23, the day the secretary of state announced the recall question would go to voters. The appointments, along with one other made two days before the special election became official, were the governor's first since April 3.

You know what intrigues me? The fact that we just had an election. This character won reelection. Now there's a huge groundswell of support to kick him out, a short time later.

People knew who and what he was at that time. The number of opinions that were changed in the intervening two years probably isn't that big. So what's the difference between then and now? Well, the recall is outside of the control of the State's Democratic Machine.

Oh, but far be it from me to cast aspersions on the integrity of the California electoral process. No, not me. Oh no.

i think the big difference is that Davis was able to portray Simon as worse than Davis
basically hey i stink but Simon stinks even more
that is how he pulled off a victory before
now since there are no primaries there are more candidates to choose from which is appealing to many
add that to the tripling of the car fees and viola! Total Recall

Poisioning the water.

I have a feeling that by the time we unload his narcissistic ass, it's going to be Sherman's march to the sea...

This is a good sign. Davis has accepted the fact that he has few days left as governor.

So is there any requirement that the California legislature confirm the appointments or is it a done deal? I'm wondering if the Republicans in the California legislature can do anything to stall the appointments.

It's my understanding there are NO repubs in the legislature. I may be (completely) wrong on this. Maybe it was the Calif State Senate.

I think the big change is that eventually the lies get so big that it's impossible to rationalize them away - even the folks at the bottom end, who usually just benefit from what the tax payers supply ended up seeing their largess shrinking an it will get worse before it gets better. Even leeches can see that it makes no sense to bleed the source dry, especially when there is no other source handy...

Jerry Brown had a whole bunch of "11th hour appointments" to the state judicial bench before he left office at the start of 1983, handing over the governorship to George Deukmejian. For the most part, the appointees were Democrat hacks and liberal turkeys, and the quality of justice in California courts suffered as a result. Take it from one who had to appear as counsel before those boobs throughout the '80's.

?!!! The situation in the California state legislature (Assembly and Senate) for Republicans is bad, but it's not that bad! Republicans still had enough members in both houses to hold up passage of this year's budget under California's 2/3 majority rule for budget approval.

This type of thing has a venerable history in the US. It goes back to at least John Adams's "Midnight Judges."

Just another example of how this recall is not good news for California... or republican governance.... Sorry guys I know its going to happen, but nothing long term good will come of it.

Too bad the California law doesn't freeze a Governor's privileges when a recall goes into effect :-(
