Women have come a long way in 50 years - but not when it comes to being leaner and fitter. A new report claims women were in much better shape 50 years ago than their descendants today, despite the modern obsession with dieting and working out.

Wow. After reading many of your posts waxing nostalgic about the 50's I thought you were making satirical posts. The comment about in the winter the clothes froze solid, but boy did they smell good when you brought them in at the end of the day would have convinced me you were joking as well, but apparently all of your posts which read like satire were 100% serious. I'm amazed.

But I'm even more amazed that with that nostalgic life you have led and the values that one would expect them to inspire, you responded to slip18 like you did. Her post was not a snippy snotty comeback but was rather an expression of amusement at what she obviously thought was a joke on your part.

To tell you the truth, the one that made me laugh the most (when I thought you were joking) was the one where you said you always put on your makeup and didn't want your infants and toddlers to see you without your makeup. I sure am glad I didn't give you a big LOL to that one, because it apparently would have deeply offended you.

i actually watched my grandmother use a wringer washer as a child

So did I. I had another relative who insisted on scrubbing her floors on her knees because she felt that the mops just didn't get the dirt up.

I think if they checked on men's fitness they would find the same thing, and for the same reasons. Even jobs involving "physical labor" are a lot less physical than they used to be.

My grandfather was a roofer. When we had our roof re-done a few years back I watched as they tossed the roofing material onto a machine that fed it onto the roof. They then used "guns" to attach the roofing material to our roof. I believe my grandfather would have had to carry packages of this stuff on his shoulder as he went up and down a ladder and they he would use a hammer all day. Same with carpentry. Sawing -- mostly involves electrical tools. Nails --- nailgun.

Let's face it, modern conveniences are wonderful, I wouldn't want to be wringing out my clothes, or beating my rugs. But, it did used to provide exercise.

My in laws live on a farm with cattle. the only machinery they have for farm work is an old ford tractor (can't afford one of those nice john deere's) and they are in awesome physical shape. They even put up the fence for the cows by hand, just the two of them. On top of the farm work my father in law also works full time and my mother in law work part time. Somehow, my mother in law still manages to cook dinner every night too. I am only 25 and hubby is 37 and they are in much better health than either of us. The hubby was in great shape too until he moved away from home. lol

'50S WOMEN WERE FITTER

You ain't just kidding.. Back in '56, I saw a Munich barmaid put one hand down, vault the 4' high bar, and smack a wisemouth GI in the face in a fell swoop.

Almost knocked me out.

Back in my day, we didn't have any of those fancy moving pictures. Back in my day there was only one show in town, and it was called 'Stare at the sun!' We'd stand there and stare until our eyeballs burst into flames and our skulls caught on fire and we liked it. We loved it. We couldn't get enough of it.

We didn't have any fancy board games, we played games like Chew the Bark off the Tree! And we liked it. We liked it fine.

We didn't have any fancy modern appliances! We didn't have fattening Mcdonalds on every corner that all the young whippersnappers eat today. We ate a big fat homemade house burger surrounded by greasy pink dough wonder bread with green peppers in the middle and we liked it! we loved it. No wonder there are so many fatasses walking around.

Men were fitter in the 50's too. As were children.

Everyone is "less fit" these days, mostly due to labor-free modern lifestyles and driving everywhere.

I loved the styles of the 40's and 50's.....very classy....I was looking at pictures of Lauren Bacall on the IMDB.....she had beautiful outfits.....a black and white hounds tooth suite, cool "T" strap flats and satin dresses....very classy. I own a poodle skirt from the 50's and a lime green chiffon dress....actually from the 60's but they are keepers!!!!!!!!!

FReegards Deej, one more note about school; my kindergarten teacher was everyones kindergarten teacher. No surprises! You knew who your first teacher would be before you started school. Our school was small and all grades K thru 12 were all on the same grounds. So I walked to the same school with my brother & sister. Some families today may have 3 kids going to 3 different school locations. Elementary, Middle & High School.
Not even school busses are safe for kids anymore. I know most parents around here drive their kids to school and pick them up. The busses leave the schools in the afternoons with just a handful of kids on them.
My kids could not imagine walking to school in snow (oh not not the snow pants!) any more than using your Mom's old clay records for pellet gun skeet and having to wait for the radio tubes to warm up! LOL
(I'm only a few years behind ya in age)

More of us would be glad to be "oppressed by the phall-centric culture" whatever. We cannot afford it. Takes two jobs to pay the stinkin' taxes.

I remember wringer washers.

So do I. My grandmother used one in the basement of her Chester, PA row home. This was in the '60s/early '70s.

rolling down car window vs. pushing a button

Thank God my 2000 Cavalier has roll down windows. Otherwise this 5'10, 203 lb. (this morning) FReeper would weigh... :-)

Oh, what a fun thread this is!
