Torres said. "And unfortunately, his new chairman, Gov. Wilson, supported 187 furiously against immigrants and Latinos."

Does Torres believe all "latinos" are immigrants trying to access taxpayer services? At least some are actually taxpayers who are fed up with spending programs and government handing out their money right and left to whoever will come to take it.

From Backhoes list and the list on Calgov2002 we have:

_______________________________________________________________

[There will be no recall. Once the signatures are in and verified, Davis will resign and let the Democratic Lt. Gov. take over making the recall moot.]

You want this old one, or me John?

I'll take it, since I have the right page bookmarked. California Election Code:

11302. If a vacancy occurs in an office after a recall petition is filed against the vacating officer, the recall election shall nevertheless proceed. The vacancy shall be filled as provided by law, but any person appointed to fill the vacancy shall hold office only until a successor is selected in accordance with Article 4 (commencing with Section 11360) or Article 5 (commencing with Section 11380), and the successor qualifies for that office.

Strong, likeable, Ah-nold,
(His name sounds like "Ronald")
He's such a good guy and
His limit's the sky.
But to be really fair,
I'd prefer Tony Blair.

Art Torres, chairman of the California Democratic Party, which has lined up behind Bustamante, slammed Schwarzenegger for choosing former Gov. Pete Wilson as his campaign chairman.

"There's a famous phrase in our community, and that is, judge a person by the friends that he keeps," Torres said.

I could make the same point to Mr. Torres.

In case anyone missed it, I highly recommend reading Horowitz's analysis.

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/962345/posts

Excerpt:

I am less amazed at conservative Republicans who still don't get it (because that's actually what Republicans are famous for) and are still in the race. As previously noted, even if a Republican candidate like Tom McClintock or Bill Simon could win the plurality to become governor, which they can't, their administration would be a disaster -- for them, for Republicans and for their conservative cause. If conservatives want to make California a conservative state they need to lay a lot more groundwork for that to be possible.

Arnold's is a dream candidacy for the Republican Party, which he alone can rescue from the dead. He has already made Republicans more user friendly to the public at large. He will make it easier for media talent in the state to relate to the Republican Party, which has ramifications for campaigns beyond California. He will inspire significant numbers of independents to vote for his party. And if he is elected -- unlike the conservatives biting at his heels -- he will be a formidable counter-balance to the Democratic legislature, which means he could actually improve the financial condition of the state.

Even more important, Governor Schwarzenegger would change the political equation for the next presidential contest in 2004. A Bush 2004 campaign with Arnold as the President's point man in the state would unquestionably turn it into a competitive affair. This means that even if Bush does not ultimately win the state, the Democrats will have to pour big dollars into the state to contest the election. The drain of money and resources will impact close races across the country.

For all these reasons Republicans of all factions should rejoice at the Schwarzenegger candidacy. It offers the only possibility of a win for state Republicans or for the Bush campaign in California. It will help to revive the California Republican Party. And it could reshape the politics of the nation.

This is about as irrelevant as it gets for me. How this recall affects President Bush is no concern of mine.

I intend to vote for President Bush in 2004 almost exclusively for his foreign policy, not for his domestic agenda, and most certainly not for his long incomprehension of California.

I'll make the vote on October 7th that best serves my state, regardless of the perceived impact on President Bush.

"Arnold likes paying taxes," said his chief financial adviser, Paul Wachter. "He always says if I'm paying a lot of taxes, I must be making a lot of money."

Sorry, but this is a really stupid statement.

"I am a dumb a$$. OK?"

I don't think so. You asked a legitimate question. But even if it had been legal for Davis to resign after certification of the recall election, there is no way Bustamante would have done what you suggest -- and for the same reason Davis is hanging on to the bitter end. These people cannot and will not give up power. It's all they're really after.
