Leavitt has been a good governor and was strongly considering a 4th term. He should be positive for EPA. This also leaves wide open race for Utah governor.

Obligatory Bush-Bashing: "Why would Bush appoint someone that comes from a state which has no environment to head the EPA?"

President Bush has picked Utah Gov. Mike Leavitt, an advocate of shifting environmental regulation to the states, to become head of the Environmental Protection Agency, a senior administration official said Monday. Hmm .. I'm guessing the enviro whackos aren't gonna like this?

Olene Walker is pretty much a nonentity.
The race to succeed her will be very crowded. There are already over a dozen likely candidates.
The most conservative are:
Senator Parley Hellewell
and
Speaker Marty Stephens
Either would be good, IMO, but at this point I would go with Hellewell. I think he has the better record.

What happened to Idaho Governor Dirk Kempthorne who was thought to have the inside track for this nomination?

Leavitt! Kind of reminds me of that song by the band Yes.

Mike Leavitt's open arms support for illegal aliens and benefits for them is nauseating, and was always an obvious favor that he and Chris Cannon (Jabba the Mutt) were doing for Bush. He and his brother are nothing more than self promoters who have gone against the interests of Utah whenever it appeared to benefit themselves.
Since lil' bro got dis-elected from his job last year, it seems like big bro was going to have problems soon. And Chris Cannon better hope there's a D.C. job waiting for him when Matt Throckmorton dumps him next year.

Utah Schools and Federal Land Exchange
May 8, 1998
On May 8, 1998 Governor Mike Leavitt and Secretary of the Interior Bruce Babbitt unveiled a historic land swap between the state and the federal government. The agreement includes a $50million cash payment for the school children of Utah, plus additional land, coal and other mineral resources. The epic agreement also ensures protection for critical land in national parks, forests, Indian reservations and the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. The agreement will implement the largest public land exchange identified anywhere in the continental United States. ...
