Aug. 11 — MONROVIA, Liberia (Reuters) - A top Liberian rebel official in the capital Monrovia said the country's war was over on Monday after the resignation of Charles Taylor as president, as long as Taylor now left the country as planned.

"For us in LURD, the war is over," said Sekou Fofana of Liberians United for Reconciliation and Democracy (LURD). "Once he leaves Liberia today we are not going to fight. The suffering of Liberians is over."

Kudos to Bush for speaking softly and carrying a big stick.

I bet those Marines floating offshore, sharpening their K-Bars and loading up their magazines had a lot to do with Taylor finally getting out of dodge.

Bush appears to have handled this one superbly.

In his speech, Taylor said, "If God wills, I will be back." I'm wondering if that was a threat, promise, or wishful thinking...?

Exactly! How much credit will he receive from the media though? Anyone taking wagers?

With Taylor Out, Liberian Rebel Says 'War Is Over'

There will be no credit, but Bush has done more for African than the so-called first black president Bill Clinton. Do you think the press would have stood by and allowed 800,000 Rwandains to die on Bush's watch as they did Clinton, who at the time had a Democrat Congress? Oh no they would not and they would have gave Jesse Jackson and all the other leftist porch monkeys all the time they wanted to smear Bush a racist!!!

I am not big on marketing gurus.

But the LURD definitely needs one. Wonder who thought up that acronym?

Just President Bush's word was enough to do it - the rebels took extra territory and held it "to be able to hand it over to coallition forces without having to fight for it again" (paraphrased from earlier articles). Looks like Afghanistan and Iraq really hurt our reputation </sarcasm>

I don't know who's taking him in but I do know that as an ruthless ex-dictator he only has two choices of career. Guest on the liberal's college speaking tour circuit, or high office in the UN.
