From the distance formula solving for t.

t=(S/(1/2a))1/2

t=(131/(32/2))1/2
t=(131/16)1/2
t=(8.1875)1/2
t=2.86

Quick back-of-the-envelope estimate: at 32/sec it would take him almost exactly 4 seconds. But he's accelerating past that speed after 1 second, so it will take a bit less, like around 3 seconds. So 3 seconds is right and 8 seconds is wrong.
