SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - Scores of Californians took the once-in-a-lifetime shot to run for governor Saturday in the state's unprecedented recall election as Democrats successfully whittled their own field to one major backup candidate in case Gov. Gray Davis is ousted.

Well, by next Wednesday we will have an official field of candidates. Well over 100 , not bad.
(This note just in from DiZney -- SnowWhite and the Seven Dwarfs have declined to enter the fray .. But Pluto and Goofy will be running!)

Ohhhhh....... this is going to be fun to watch, Gumby's career is over. I'm not all that thrilled with Arnold, but I may vote for him. I'd really like to see McClintock be elected though.

Very interesting re-write at either the SacBee or at SFGate. The article on Drudge has some significant omissions and/or additions.
A third paragraph in the AP article has been either added by SFGate or deleted by the Sacramento Bee:
SFGAte: '"The Democratic Party is united around the slogan that I introduced Thursday morning, no on recall, yes on Bustamante," Bustamante said. "For the next 59 days I will work as hard as I can on both parts of that campaign slogan."
Looks like SFGate is getting some electioneering in for Bustamante.
Compare the Bee's report of the recall petition numbers with SFGate's:
SacBee: "It took 897,158 voter signatures - 12 percent of the total number of voters in the previous gubernatorial election - to get the recall election approved."
SFGAte: "He is the first governor of the Golden State to face a recall election, which took fewer than 1 million voters to put it on the ballot.
Is that spin, or what?
Still no mention of Tom McClintock...

And neither version notes that almost TWO million Californians signed to recall Doofus.

What's it take to file for this race in California? If I lived there I think I might be tempted to file just to be able to say I was once a gubernatorial candidate in California. Who knows? Ten years from now it might look good on a resume or something.

$3500 and 65 Registered Voter signature will do it. Although one of the State Supreme Court Justices thinks the entry level is too low!
Also 10,000 Registered Voters signatures and no money gets you in!

Some fascinating stories in my local papers including a lady - Methilda Karel of Long Beach who is 100 - that is entered! They have a picture on A3 of the Press Telegram with her and the Porn queen Mary Carey waiting for their paperwork at Norwalk!
