California employers in July axed a net 21,800 jobs half the jobs the entire nation shed last month sending payrolls plunging to their lowest level since the state's job market began its long slide more than two years ago, according to government data released Friday.
The losses marked the largest one-month jobs decline in California since December.
Nearly every sector posted losses notably retailing, transportation, manufacturing and business services demonstrating a widespread reluctance among employers to hire.
< SNIP >
In percentage terms, California has performed about the same as the rest of the country in job losses over the last 2½ years, with both the state and nation shedding about 2% of their nonfarm payroll jobs over that time.

Hmmmmm...job losses is what the Dems harp on when they attack Bush on the economy...and here half of the total is from California, a Dem controlled uberliberal state...thanks for shedding a little light on this disparity!

I think the point of the article is that the rest of the country is improving, while CA is still languishing.

And, according to the article, half of those losses in the last month have been in CA. CA's had a severe impact on the unemployment rate, which nationally is still very low. I'm not saying the situation is great by any means, but it's clear CA is horribly run now.

If CA had half the job losss last month and was performing at the same rate as the rest of the country, then CA would have half the population of the country. Does not compute!
Population of the US 281 million
Population of CA 34 million
Statistics are like swimsuits, what they show is interesting but what they don't show is vital.

DUUUUUH!
I was sitting here reading the article and posts, in a pre-caffeine-hit haze, and your post about proportions slapped the foggy bottoms of my waning grey cells!
Excellent point.
Thank you.

According to the article, over the last 2 1/2 years, California has suffered the same as the rest of the country. However, in July ,half of the U.S. job losses were in California. The state had a bad month.

"But, in general, the protective system of our day is conservative, while the free trade system is
destructive. It breaks up old nationalities and pushes the antagonism of the proletariat and the
bourgeoisie to the extreme point. In a word, the free trade system hastens the social revolution. It
is in this revolutionary sense alone, gentlemen, that I vote in favor of free trade." ~ Karl Marx, On
the Question of Free Trade, January 9, 1848

impose regulations chuck full of intrigues, redistribution plans, arbitrary law, and interdependence
schemes, will win out against the conservative interests of every free nation. What could be better
than to use free trade to reverse the advantage of the relatively free, moral, prosperous, and
strong nations of the Earth, so that the tyrannical, amoral, poor, and weak nations of the socialist
bloc might get the upper hand? What could be a more cunning approach than to market the idea
that those who oppose free trade are enemies of freedom?"

I heard Rush say yesterday that hiring, employment increases, are LAGGING indicators of a growing economy.
If hiring people back means that we are already in a recovery, then what does laying off people represent?
Usually, doesn't it mean we are heading INTO a recession?
To: sarcasm
"Is it your contention that the national economy is well run?"Unlike the socialist utopia you wish us to become, the US does not have a planned economy. Nobody "runs" the economy, and we like it that way.
