CRAWFORD, Texas (AP) - President Bush is leaving the door open to campaigning for California Republican gubernatorial candidate Arnold Schwarzenegger if it could help tip the balance in a close recall election, officials said today.

Nearly a dozen people with ties to Bush emphasized he has no plans now to do so. But none would rule it out.

I think it's too late for that maneuver. The SS has already certified, so (I believe) if Davis steps down, the recall election will still proceed in October, even though Bustamante will be acting gov for 2 months.

Can't be said often enough. If he and Rove try to shove another RINO down our throats, the backlash could get nasty. Personally, I believe W is totally out of touch with the Republican grass roots in this state. We could be his best friends, but he and Rove keep sticking it to us. First, by handing over the state party machinery to Parsky & Co. and then by giving Riordan the nod. Now these rumors of repeating this sorry performance. You would have thought he got the message when we trounced Riordan in the primary.

Makes no difference in California and nationwide associating with Arnold will only help Bush. Maybe the two of them should visit a carrier in San Diego. Or come ashore at Camp Pendleton in one of those U.S. Marine Hovercraft.

I really don't think these decisions and stances you site that W and Rove are trying to, as you say "shove down our throats" are as personal of an attack as you think. I simply believe it is a matter of who CAN win, not who is necessarily best. You have to be a realist about CA. There IS NO STRICT REPUBLICAN that CAN win in CA. CA has to be lead in that direction. The number of Dem voters in certain big city portions of CA are too great to overlook. If Arnold can inspire and lead, I say give him a chance, and that glimmer of hope that he gives to the Republican party is the twinkle in Karl's eye for CA. As Republican strategist, his job is to observe, calculate, and steer. CA is in one sad state right now....baby steps and perspective, please.

Maybe Bush needs to simply compliment Arnold on his genuine feelings of love for this country, and talk up the fact that in America, an immigrant can rise to great heights, and do great good, and that's what makes America great.

I want a Republican, even a marginal one, who can win. ANY Republican is better than ANY Dem. At least you can work with them and exert some pressure and influence, which is certainly something you can't do with a Dem.

Sorry...once the election is certified (as it has been) then even if greyout resigns, Bustamente becomes gov only until the result of the second question on the recall is determined and a new governor takes office immediately...

Looks like Arnold may be the man. He is certainly not a conservative. He's more liberal than even moderate from what I read...but...he is a republican and if that can help the GOP in '04....why not have W try and help him?

Why do we need Arnold? From what I've heard he will act like the worst liberal you could ever hope to find.

We don't need a big star in California politics.

We need a good moral person who can lead; not one who can razzle dazzle us.

I am sick and tired of these celebs and everyone else who thinks that we are all going to fall down at their altars.

I love America and want to keep it free. Is that so bad?
