"he should spend twice as much time meeting with people who support him."If you truly support the President you will not want him to waste his time massaging your ego.

"Rush has addressed this several times."
I heard Rush talking about this yesterday. The black conservative was Niger Innis. Innis had appeared on Hannity & Colmes the night before and reported that he had learned the President had been blindsided by Cummings who brought Jackson along without anyone's knowledge.

Maybe he was reminding JJ that to lie to his face means five more years in the badlands. JJ has been persona non grata since 2000 and nothing bad has happened. Black people generally are not going to vote for Bush because he meets w/ people like JJ. He has to support issues (like school choice) that are important to Black people.
This isn't an all-knowing political move by the President, it's just dumb.

"Massaging egos" has nothing to do with it. "Moving the ball forward on the conservative agenda" is more like it. Like I said, meet with your sworn enemies if you like, but don't ignore your friends.

Okay, it helps if I read all the posts. If the prez, was blindsided, then he just acts gracious. Right thing to do. Take back what I said.

That's right. The Pope did. So, who can blame GWB for being polite and meeting with JJ? Not me.

But not all black conservative leaders are angry. Kevin Martin, who as head of Project 21 in Washington had helped convince NASCAR to stop its financial support of Jackson and his groups, thought Bush had gotten the better of Jackson. "If he'd refused to meet Jackson, then all the television networks would have put Jesse on TV to talk about the snub," Martin said. "As it was, Bush came away from this meeting the bigger man. He played Jackson like the fiddle that he was. It was a good political move." Excellent point.
Conservatives, he argued, need to take a longer view of meetings such as this. "What this president has done is to sideline the far-left NAACP, which is still suffering from the reign of terror of Julian Bond, in favor of the more moderate National Urban League and others. Fifteen minutes of the president's time with Jackson in the context of national politics is nothing. If you want to get this president re-elected, you take away the temper-tantrum toys from the likes of Jesse Jackson."

15 minutes, eh? What was the meeting about? Has he refused to meet with members of CORE? Or is this one of those many "sow the dissent as thick as we can" pieces, meant to confuse and divide conservative voters?

"He has to support issues (like school choice) that are important to Black people."He DOES support school choice. He doesn't stand a chance in he!! of getting it passed right now. We need not only him, but a CLEAR REPUBLICAN MAJORITY IN THE SENATE in '04.

Keep your friends close and your enemies closer... Lest anyone should forget, where those sage words came from:
As in the Godfather, Vito Corleone proved he was the better man to hold the meeting, and it did not alter the future actions that he took. Rather it improved his chances of future success.

Bush sees je$$e and has the Secret Service remove him as an unwanted intruder.
Oh, that's right...he couldn't do that. Then he'd have the Black CockUs members against him as well.
Hmmmm...
