The Real Anti-Catholic Bias

CRISIS Magazine - e-Letter
August 6, 2003

**********************************************

Dear Friend,

What's the fastest way to make a Democrat angry? Call him anti-Catholic.

That's exactly what happened last week when the Committee for Justice ran a controversial ad that pictured a closed courtroom door with a sign on it that read, "Catholics need not apply." Referring to the recent trend in the Senate to stall voting on Catholic nominees to federal court positions, the ad implied that Democrats were beginning to apply a religion test to those nominees, effectively barring Catholics from federal benches.

The issue came to a head after a vote on Bill Pryor's nomination in the Senate Judiciary Committee was split exactly along party lines -- the Democrats being unanimously against him. But these same Democrats -- some among them Catholic, by their own definition -- bristled at the ad. They insisted that their hesitation had to do with Pryor's "deeply held beliefs" on issues like abortion and homosexuality, something they said was entirely removed from his religion.

The fact that Pryor has an impeccable public record of upholding the law on these issues doesn't seem to make a difference. Nor does it seem to make a difference that ANY faithful Catholic would still be automatically excluded by these criteria, their privately held beliefs trumping any public record, no matter how flawless.

Well, the argument over the ad rolls on, and Democrats continue to cry "foul" about the charge of anti-Catholicism. But a lesser-known Catholic nominee, Leon Holmes, might just prove that the charge of anti-Catholicism could stick after all.

Now you may not have heard of Holmes before -- his nomination hasn't gotten as much press lately -- but he's been nominated to serve as a federal judge for eastern Arkansas. Holmes is a faithful Catholic with orthodox positions on the family, but more importantly to his nomination, he has an impressive legal career that has won him the endorsement of the American Bar Association, recognition from his hometown newspaper, a teaching position at the University of Arkansas School of Law, and the praise of even those who disagree with him, calling him a man "shot through with integrity."

Sounds like the perfect candidate. But once again, Democrats have seized on Holmes's deep faith as a reason to doubt that he would be an impartial and fair judge. More than criticizing his antiabortion stance, though, some Democrats have gone so far as to call him a "misogynist" for his views on the mutual subjugation of husbands and wives as taught in the Bible.

You see, Holmes and his wife wrote a short essay that was printed in their diocesan newspaper on the traditional Church teachings about the relationship between men and women, teachings that they call "grand, elegant, and beautiful." The paper takes up such unpopular topics as the male-only priesthood, the understanding of God as "father," and the watering-down of the liturgy with gender-neutral language.

Mr. and Mrs. Holmes also discussed the role of husbands and wives, explaining that their relationship was to mirror the relationship of Christ (male) and the Church (female), as we are taught in the Bible. Just as the Church places herself under the care and guidance of Christ, so too are wives to "submit" to their husbands' care. In addition, just as Christ laid down His life for the Church, husbands are called to sacrifice everything for the good of their wives, whom they must love and respect above all else.

This is what Catholics believe to be true -- and it isn't just about the relationship of men and women. It's a larger sign for the mystical relationship between Christ and His Church.

Now, it's understandable that some people would misunderstand Catholic teaching on this subject if it hadn't been properly explained to them. That's the kind of misunderstanding that Mr. and Mrs. Holmes tried to clear up by writing this piece.

But for Senators Schumer, Feinstein, and Durbin, this is misogyny, end of story. And not only that: It is enough reason to bar him from a seat on a federal bench.

Do you see what's happening here? Holmes is being discriminated against because of his faith. It doesn't matter if others unfairly misinterpret that faith, or even if Holmes's personal beliefs don't interfere with his adherence to the law. Simply holding that belief is enough to disqualify him.

Democrats can call it what they want, but this attack on Holmes goes to the heart of his personal religious beliefs. Only by abandoning them would they consider him fit to serve, and that's a religious test of the most obvious kind.

At least in Holmes's case, this Catholic need not apply.

Talk to you next week,

Deal

This is from an e-letter that I receive. Has anyone else heard of this situation with Leon Holmes?

Yet, it's okay for women to be forced to wear burqas?

One of the strongest measures the Church could take to restore its moral credibility would be to excommunicate these Catholics of Convenience such as Kennedy, Kerry, Pelosi, Dodd and the others. Will they do it?
No way.

I haven't heard of him, but I'll be watching and listening. It's pretty sad that if you believe in morality the Dems don't think you should be a judge.

The San Diego courts just ruled that the Boy Scouts should be considered a "religion" because they don't allow homesexuals to be leaders in their organization, so the city shouldn't allow them to use their parks. It's really getting scary.

According to NARAL, 14 (pro-death) organizations oppose his nomination. Here is Planned Parenthood's argument.

It's open season on catholics and your post is one more affirmation. Thank you for posting it.

SAVE ROE

Here is an extract ...

"Holmes has explained his support for a constitutional amendment that would outlaw abortion, saying that "the abortion issue is the simplest issue this country has faced since slavery was made unconstitutional and it deserves the same response."4 He also dismissed concerns that a constitutional amendment banning abortion would not allow the procedure in cases of rape by saying that the "concern for rape victims is a red herring because conceptions from rape occur with approximately the same frequency as snowfall in Miami."3 In his writings, Holmes has even twice compared abortion to the Holocaust.4 "

It's about time we used the religious issues as wedge issues. There are still too many people connected to the Dummycrats by history and tradition who have no idea how anti-religious and anti-Catholic the party and its idealogy is. The rise of the homo issue will put the Dumbocrats anti-religiousness in sharp relief.

I agree 100%. It should be clear by now to anyone watching that the dims have declared open warfare against Christianity. When the liberals can't get a denomination to buckle under to their ideology, they tar them w/ the bigot brush and exclude them from public debate.

The Church MUST stand strong against those who call themselves Catholic and then denigrate every Catholic belief.

How much longer Holy Father will you allow these hypocrits to spread lies and deception. How much longer will you allow them to clothe themselves as 'catholics" even as they actively attempt to destroy all that is holy.

Here is the church's Rubicon, it either stands up for its beliefs or it follows the Episcopalians into irrelevancy.

"Referring to the recent trend in the Senate to stall voting on Catholic nominees to federal court positions, the ad implied that Democrats were beginning to apply a religion test to those nominees, effectively barring Catholics from federal benches."

"Article. VI.

Clause 3: The Senators and Representatives before mentioned, and the Members of the several State Legislatures, and all executive and judicial Officers, both of the United States and of the several States, shall be bound by Oath or Affirmation, to support this Constitution; but no religious Test shall ever be required as a Qualification to any Office or public Trust under the United States."

So the question needs to be asked:
If ( although if implies a nebulous quality that certainly comes into doubt when one listens to the comments from certain 'publice servants' ) certain Senators are applying a religious test as qualification for office, and therefore contemptuously ignoring their oath, what remedy is to be had? Because of the club-like nature of the Senate, impeachment and removal will not work.
Talk amongst yourselves.

It's time for folks in San Diego and other places to speak up and speak up very loudly so they can be heard LOUD and CLEAR on the subject. We sit idly by and let these things encroach upon our values and freedoms. We're to blame.

That "report" has come up before on FR.

The document to which CBS refers (and they got the story from some lawyer---a warning signal---) actually has nothing to do with covering up pedophilia and EVERYTHING to do with the seal of Confession.

Be careful that you don't drink the CBS Kool-Aid..

Nice of you to assist the Pope in geography--I'm sure he was unaware of the location of the Rubicon until you pointed it out.

While the Church, IMHO, should help the Dirty Dozen to understand the implications of their Faith by excommunicating them, our opinions on the topic will have little to do with the outcome.

You did note that Daschle was rapped by his Bishop, but it was only due to a leak that the story went public. No reason to believe that other jerks like Daschle have NOT been reminded, but we have no leaks to prove it.

The Rubicon I speak of has little to do w/ geography and everything to do w/ spirituality. I have a great love for JP II he is a true and holy man. My prayer is that he still has the strength to address the awesome challenges that face not only Catholics but all Christians.
