A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves largess from the public treasury.

They can use silly rants like this one to tell anyone over 45, "See? It really IS us against them! You better vote Democrat or they're coming for you!"

doesn't the logic of this article actually lead genXers to vote republican?

btw, i don't think it's a 'card' - the conflict in generational prioities is very real. i think what especially galls genXers is that the boomers, seeing the social security and medicare train wrecks ahead of them have done nothing (not one thing) to address the problem. the closest they came was to actually stop borrowing from the trust fund for a few years, but that didn't last long.

Oh, and one more thing. Since we are discussing class envy.

This Gen X ought to consider himself lucky when it comes to SS! I've been forced to give up hard earned money into this G** D*** ponzi scheme for over 30 years now! This dammed scheme will be broken and discontinued long before he ever loses the kind of dollars I've already had to thrown down this money sinkhole.

"Baby Boomers are a category born between 1946 and 1965. The generation before them, therefore, is the one born, roughly, 1930-1946, none of which served in WW2."

Yes, the 'silent generation' born 1930-1946 experienced WWII as children (most of them) and some experienced the depression as children. Many fought in the Korean War.
They were coming of age in the Eisenhower and Kennedy administrations.

It is not really helpful to generalize about generations.
There are creative, hard-working people in every generation. And some lazy,mean-spirited and resentful people in every generation.

"...the conflict in generational prioities is very real..."

I can't speak for other "boomers", but I will NEVER, EVER, vote for any type of government handout! Not SS, not free medicine, health care, nothing.

I will never do such to my children and grandchildren. I also expect to care for myself in old age and have significant contribution to hand to them when I die (if the gov doesn't take it away first that is).

Most likely the gov will tax away all my hard earned and saved retirement and posessions, to give to the lazy "boomers". They'll say it's not fair that I have so much money saved up.

I will have paid for more government wealth redistribution, than any group in world history, and I won't see a dime of it back! Boomer Bust my ass!

Boomers can find other things to do besides play Nintendo,

Yeah, great, so Nintendo games are going to be interupted for pot filled, Viagra fueled hippie love-ins, GROSS!

;-)

In the early 90's, the boomers launched a huge media blitz calling all of generation X (a meaningless name) worthless. children included. They held themselves up as this overachieving super generation that saved the world. They also saw their parents as closed minded and uneducated.

They brought us the 60's BS movement that is threatening this nation and ALL of its institutions today.

Generation X saw the corruption and megalomania of this generation and wanted no part of it. We don't need to change the country. We want to improve it. boomer liberals still seek to destroy everything and everyone that stands in their way.

Would the X-ers prefer that Mom and Dad move in with them?

Can't you just see? "Well, darlin', we've spent our whole lives raising you, paying for your college, giving you every conceivable kind of lessons and trinkets, let you move in when your dot-com went bust (and you didn't listen to us to put your money somewhere safe), but now you're going to have to choose. You can either have Mom&Dad move in, and save your inheritence. Or, you say "no" and all of that money will go to nursing homes, elder day care, other necessities."

Yeah, let's just see what generation is looking for Boomers to have all of this stuff subsidized.

This author is so narcisstic it should be labelled "humor".

No, all I expect from my Boomer parents is that they pay for their own damned retirement and not expect me to help them out. However, since they've been spending every dime they've ever made and saved nothing, I doubt they'll have a nice retirement.

Henrietta: And just how much of that money did they spend on you? <^..^>

Mom and Dad aren't moving in with me, that's for sure... After the abuse my sister and I suffered at their hands, they should be grateful we still speak to them.

And you two should be ashamed of yourselves for jumping to some conclusions about me and my "attitude" about my parents.

In all seriousness, I don't know how I'll be able to afford CA housing costs, private schools for pre-college kids, college costs, braces ... AND aging parents, PARTICULARLY if I'm being crushed by hiked FICA taxes.

(This thread is making me crazy)

pogo101: Here's what you do. You tell the ol' folks that they can move in, but the cost of rent is their Social Security checks. Take that check, and pay your mortgage. Remember, the longer they stay alive, the longer Uncle Sam'll send that check to you every month.

Give 'em a room, get the Viagra prescription filled, and you won't even have to see them!

I left home at age 18, and they haven't given me one thin dime since.

Henrietta: I'm truly sorry that you and your sister were abused. And, no, you don't have to speak to them. Latch on to some friend's parents, or an older neighbor or coworker, and develop a positive relationship with them.

What I've observed of the boomer generation is they bought all those trinkets so they didn't have to spend as much time with their children.

They let the schools go to hell, they ignored the immigrant problem (and still are), the boomer CEO's are offshoring as fast as they can, they're voting themselves entitlements at the Xer's expense. As for a lesson in saving money who gave us the social security/medicare burden?

Fact is most boomers were absent while their children were growing up, ever hear of the "latch-key" generation, that would be the X'ers).

Gen X is the up and coming generation, we have a lot of cleaning up to do when our parents are done partying at our expense. Just be ready to be kicked out of the house because we view the boomers as the loser generation, that's what they called us, hence the name Gen X.
