Rather than start a vanity, maybe I can get my answers here...

I'd like to run a duel boot of linux and my current Win2000. Where do I start? What flavor is best for a midlevel newbie to Linux (I've worked with Unix a few years back, so I am somewhat familiar with vi, and shells, and mounting FS's).

Eventually (when I get all the apps I need in Linux working) I'd like to ditch MS altogher.

This is exactly the kind of news that helps the suits (i.e., CIOs, CFOs, CTOs and CEOs) justify their (perceived) risk-averse, Microsoft decisions.

"We have been educating end users on the risks of running an operating system that is an unauthorized derivative of Unix. McBride adds...

Not Linux, but unauthorized derivative of Unix. Look out Free BSD, you're next!

It should not be missed that by taking this action pre-emptively, instead of waiting for SCO to sue it, Red Hat has chosen the venue. The issue of whether SCO's copyright claims are valid will be decided by a jury in Delaware, not Utah.

Because of the huge number of corporations chartered in Delaware (as both SCO and Red Hat are), the federal court there does business disputes for a living. Some lawyers even refer to the federal district court in Delaware as "Corp Court." This court is not a good place for the grandstanding maneuvers that characterize David Boies' practice of law. This is a court where serious lawyers are expected to come and take care of business quickly and efficiently.

Watch for more of these lawsuits in other countries. Most countries do not allow the kind of public trashing of other people's business that SCO has been doing here in the U.S.

Germany has already ordered SCO not to make any more such claims there, under penalty of $250K per occurrence. SuSE, the 'Red Hat of Europe', can be expected to file similar suits throught the EU, and to win most of them at speeds that David Boies has never seen from a court. Each such win will also involve damage claims, for SuSE (and in fact Red Hat) can make the same sort of charges that have been made in this suit by Red Hat. SCO derives 48% of its revenue from outside the U.S.; choking off this revenue stream to satisfy damage claims would put a serious crimp in SCO's war chest.

SCO will probably be facing similar lawsuits in six to ten countries within the month. They can either spend the money to defend themselves, or forfeit their business in each country (as they have done in Germany). In two months, there could already be judgements against SCO in Australia, Japan, Poland, Germany, France, the UK, and Denmark. Each one will take a bite out of SCO's treasury, and stop the flow of revenue from that country.

Mr. McBride will undoubedly continue with his Mullah Omar act, promising us Oceans of Blood and Seas of Fire, but his game is almost over.

SCO was looking to shakedown quite a few companies or get bought. I think at this point, when all is said and done, SCO will cease to exist within a few years (their lawsuit with IBM takes place in 2005 I believe).
