Cigarette packs could soon carry distrurbing pictures of cancer-ravaged organs.
A new study shows smokers have become immune to current warnings on packets and calls for a radical re-think.
It could lead to the use of images pictures of damaged hearts and lungs to push home the 'smoking kills' message.
Experts at the Cancer Research UK Centre for Tobacco Control Research in Scotland led the European-wide investigation.
Interviews were conducted with 56 focus groups in Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Spain and Sweden.
Participants looked at pre-2001 "small" warnings on cigarette packs and current large "black and white" warnings.
The results showed it was vital for warnings to be continually "refreshed" to avoid smokers becoming immune to them.
One of the best methods of renewing warnings was shown to be through the use of images.
Research officer Elinor Devlin said: "This is a careful balancing act.
"There is a need to grab attention but we want smokers to then interact with the warnings, not feel victimised.
"Warnings should offer information to smokers so they know all the risks.
"A smoker then has facts to inform their decision on whether they should consider giving up."

Add my Mom and Sister to the list.
This is a great idea. I suggest we extend this to putting posters of aborted children on the outside walls of abortion clinics.
But, to get into the spirit of the thing, may I suggest that McDonald's should put photos of grossly obese people on their Big Mac wrappers? Makes about as much sense as this.
Stop that... you're gonna have all the female freepers going back to see what they missed... and maybe a few gay freepers.
Only a moron would eat fast food knowing what we know now.
Only a moron would drink more than one or two drinks at a time knowing what we know now.
Only a moron would have sex outside of marriage knowing what we know now.
Only a moron would ride in a car without a seat belt knowing what we know now.
I could go on, but you get the picture. Sure, smoking is dangerous. But so are a lot of other things.
And damaged brain cells.
Like walking down the street, being in a car, stopping in a 7-Eleven, making a wrong turn in a wrong neighborhood, illegal drugs, etc., etc., all of which can kill one faster than smoking.
Ladies, How About A Smoker's Beard?!
Smoking may give you bad breath, smelly clothing, yellow teeth -- but a beard??!! A recent study of more than 50,000 women found that those who smoked more than a pack of cigarettes a day were 50 percent more likely to have excessive facial hair than nonsmokers. The study attributed the abnormality to the affects smoking has on the balance of male and female hormones and the medical and cosmetic consequences of tobacco use.
