The “Conservatives Are Crazy” Study: Paid For by Taxpayers
National Review Online ^ | August 1, 2003 | Byron York

Posted on 08/02/2003 9:46:49 AM PDT by John Jorsett

Congressional investigators call for a new look at funding academic research.

An academic study of conservatism that lumped together Adolf Hitler, Benito Mussolini, Ronald Reagan, and Rush Limbaugh was funded by federal grants, according to congressional investigators.

The study, "Political Conservatism as Motivated Social Cognition," was written by John T. Jost, a professor at Stanford University, Jack Glaser and Frank J. Sulloway, professors at the University of California, Berkeley, and Arie W. Kruglanski, a professor at the University of Maryland. It was published in the American Psychological Association's Psychological Bulletin.

Congressional investigators have found that the study was financed by $1.2 million in federal funds. According to the House Republican Study Committee, Kruglanski received National Institute of Mental Health grants totaling $976,762, Glaser received National Institute of Mental Health grants totaling $48,464, and Jost and Kruglanski together received an estimated $213,800 from the National Science Foundation.

The authors describe their work as an examination of "the hypotheses that political conservatism is significantly associated with (1) mental rigidity and closed-mindedness, including (a) increased dogmatism and intolerance of ambiguity, (b) decreased cognitive complexity, (c) decreased openness to experience, (d) uncertainty avoidance, (e) personal needs for order and structure, and (f) need for cognitive closure; (2) lowered self-esteem; (3) fear, anger, and aggression; (4) pessimism, disgust, and contempt....We have argued that these motives are in fact related to one another psychologically, and our motivated social-cognitive perspective helps to integrate them."

One of the more controversial assertions in the federally funded work is the authors' argument that Hitler, Mussolini, Reagan, and Limbaugh share common traits as conservatives. "One is justified in referring to Hitler, Mussolini, Reagan, and Limbaugh as right-wing conservatives," the authors write in a published adjunct to the study, "not because they share an opposition to 'big government' or a mythical, romanticized view of Aryan purity — they did not share these specific attitudes — but because they all preached a return to an idealized past and favored or condoned inequality in some form."

Among the sources cited by the scholars in support of their conclusions are the works of New York Times columnist Paul Krugman. For example, the authors write, "It has been observed that Republicans are far more single-mindedly and unambiguously aggressive in pursuing Democratic scandals (e.g. Whitewater, the Clinton-Lewinsky affair) than Democrats have been in pursuing Republican scandals (e.g. Iran Contra, Bush-Harken Energy, Halliburton). In commenting on the Republican 'scandal machine,' Krugman argued that, 'there is a level of anger and hatred on the right that has at best a faint echo in the anti-globalization left, and none at all in mainstream liberalism. Indeed, all the liberals I know generally seem unwilling to face up to the nastiness of contemporary politics.'"

On another occasion, the authors cite Krugman on the legacy of Ronald Reagan. "[Reagan's] chief accomplishment," they write, "in effect, was to roll back both the New Deal era and the 1960s, which was also the goal of former speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives Newt Gingrich and many other neo-conservatives often regarded as advocates of change. As Krugman observed in the context of current debates concerning the privatization of social security, 'hard-line conservatives are determined to build a bridge back to the 1920s.'"

In an interview with National Review Online, Florida Republican Rep. Tom Feeney, who looked into the study and its funding, called the project "outrageous."

"Taxpayers shouldn't be required to pay for these things," Feeney said. "If private universities, privately funded, want to study ridiculous hypotheses for political agendas, they have a right to do so, but when you are basically confiscating money from taxpayers to fund left-wing rhetoric and dress it up as scientific study, I think you have a real problem with credibility."

The full text of the study can be found here. The adjunct, in which the authors address some objections to the study, can be found here.

Nope, however if I were to pursue finances for such an effort my pursuit wouldn't be to take money from someone who had no say in whether to grant it or not! :)

The old "taxes as theft" routine, eh? We may need another study for folks just like you. ;-)

Actually they should be forced to publicly defend their views (science?) in front of hostile taxpayers.

Bump!

I question how many conservatives are liberals. We have a Congress and President that are represented as conservatives. They have run up the biggest deficit in history. How can that be said to be conservative? We have a military scattered to the four winds all over the world and neglecting our own borders.

That surely can't be classed as conservative with the largest expenditures it requires and the neglect it gives our own security. Is it conservative to enact all the special legislation regarding homeland defense when we fought WW II without the need for infringing on our civil rights?

Is it conservative to advocate every trade union in the world as well as the UN and loss of our sovereignty? I am concerned we have a group of neoconservatives that are as socialist or fascist oriented as the so-called liberals. Don't be satisfied with the label but look at the actions to judge the wolf in sheep's clothing.

Yeah seriously, this is an outrage. $1.2 million for this? And we have high school graduates that can't read? This is an outrageous examples of misplaced priorities and the epidemic corruption in the academic establishment.

Perhaps. IMO it could be interesting, however be careful, for what one may find to be an interesting study could turn out to be something more.

No routine involved however going by my previous postings I presume,by your post, that I may be conveying that mindset. If you so desire to take on such a challenging study yourself just please fund it with finances that are given openly and willingly! :)

An experiment, perhaps? Maybe even a whole state for a laboratory?

There's something very sinister about your attitude, I think. ;-)

Bluebelle is an Aussie mix. In fact, we suspect that she may also have some Husky in her. She had a very difficult life before we rescued her when she was about 4 years old. She's very primitive, but very, very smart. There are about 20 words that we have to spell now and that list keeps growing. She's learned to read my mind. LOL.

Aussies need a job and I am Bluebelle's job.

Yes, dogs are man's best friend.

Take good care of your Husky! ;-)

My proposal is serious.

This month's Atlantic Monthly ran statistics which implied that many professors at top-rank colleges in this country have virtually no conservative colleagues. That's particularly devastating in disciplines that are mealy-mouthed mush at best - such as psychology, politcal and social "sciences". Forced public defense in front of conservative audiences will reveal weaknesses pronto - and will discourage political quacks and hacks from undertakings like this.

It will also expose conservatives to serious leftist scholars who can make their case.

While I'm not exactly thrilled with the Patriot Act, the idea that WWII was fought without infringing on civil rights is a little odd. Not only were Japanese interned, the House had its own committee to look into the Nazi influence in our government. HUAC was a committee originally formed (under a different name, then) to go after Germans instead of Soviets. To think we have more civl rights violations today, than we did in the 40's is a little extreme. Heck, the FBI had unlimited powers and had tabs on everybody back then.

Take good care of your Husky! ;-)

I will without question....when he's not taking care of me! I have gone through 3 couches, 3 recliners, torn up carpet, hardwood moulding ripped to shred's, 4 misplaced shavers, drapes, and 2 holes in my sheet rock from his VERY strong paws! Whew!

I picked him up at "Canine rescue" to save him from certain termination and can now see why! We make a good match however, for I wouldn't give him up for anything, obviously!

I would be a prime candidate for a study on toleration!!! :-)

It was published in the American Psychological Association's Psychological Bulletin.

This is the scariest part to me. American Psychological Assn..... Isn't this the same (or similar) group that is considering "de-classifying" pedophelia from a perversion to normal behavior?? IMHO, the shrinks are becoming a group of leftist NWO flakes!

>>This reminds me of the Soviet practice of putting political dissidents in mental institutions for all sorts of inovative therapies.

I regularly engage lefties on a neutral board. It's amazing how often they suggest "you're crazy" or "you should be in a mental institution". I immediately bring up the Soviet example; they don't like it.

This "research" was real, and we paid for it. And I am furious about it.

Uh oh, you can't be furious, you'll exhibit symptom #3 (fear, anger, and aggression), thus proving their point.

If "the definition of insanity is repeating the same behavior over and over while expecting different results" and socialism/collectivism has never worked anywhere it's been tried yet liberals insist we are mean-spirited, selfish etc. for not wanting to try it again - why are conservatives the ones who being labeled insane?
