Leaving aside the Aztec issue, when we're in the worst budget crisis in state history and the legislature can spend nearly half a million dollars on a *statue*, it's sure confirmation they don't *really* need any more of our tax dollars. Incredibly frustrating.

California can't fall off into the ocean soon enough. What kind of crap is this?

Figures. Only in Californication would they find it appropriate to use taxpayer money to fund a shrine to a pagan god and dedicate it to the butt pirates whose own promiscuous behavior caused their death.

The Aztec image you posted on another thread seemed most appropriate here.

"The project, planned for Lincoln Park in northeastern Los Angeles, has been promoted by Assembly member Jackie Goldberg, a member of the legislature's joint budget committee and the state's Gay and Lesbian Caucus, which has sponsored a number of controversial bills this year."
This is the same fat cow that was overheard throughout the state capitol planning to stall the budget for political gain.
F You Jackie Goldberg!

There should be a suit based on 1st Amendment grounds. I've noticed this trend where pagan gods have become vogue. I think I read that the new Catholic Church in Los Angeles has some pagan influence in the architecture, too! It should not be supported by state funds.

Well, as a monument to human sacrifice (in this case, to the god of hedonism), perhaps it's entirely appropriate. Of course, the planners are completely blind to the irony.

How 'bout a smallpox memorial? Malaria memorial? Heroin memorial? Crack memorial? Lung cancer memorial? Oh, wait--they want "SSpecial" rights and priveledges.

A taxpayer funded AIDS memorial. A memorial to mostly deviant in-duh-vidual behavior.
Sheesh.
Let the perverts fund it.

We have statues, reliefs, friezes and paintings of Greek and Roman gods around in many public places.
Why is a mythological god from Mexico worst than a mythological god from Europe?

If the supporters of this boondoggle truly reverenced life, they would put up a statue of Cortez, instead. By putting a stop to the ruthless Aztec slaughter of their slave tribes, he saved countless innocent lives.
And in so doing, he made possible the labor force that allows Californians to enjoy a wide variety of fresh fruits and vegetables today. ;)
