Bills to keep jobs in USA create uproar
USA TODAY ^
Posted on 07/29/2003 7:09:27 AM PDT by Mick2000
Just three years ago, Congress voted to allow more foreign workers into the United States. Times have changed.
Politicians are proposing tough opponents say misguided steps to keep jobs at home in the face of rising unemployment, a growing number of white-collar jobs being transferred to India and other countries and lingering anger over some U.S. allies' opposition to the war in Iraq.
The House has passed measures to require the Defense and State departments to buy a larger share of equipment from U.S. firms. The measure, which has provoked a corporate and political uproar, has not been approved by the Senate.
Legislators in several states are trying to bar the export of government jobs to foreign companies.
Sen. Saxby Chambliss, R-Ga., chair of a Judiciary subcommittee, plans a hearing today on possible problems in the L-1 visa program, which allows companies to bring workers to the USA from their foreign operations. Workers complain that firms are using the program as a backdoor way to replace domestic employees with cheaper labor.

Let's just hope that the cure isn't worse than the disease. The slippery slope starts with, let's make sure govt. contractors higher US workers (for the good of the country), then let's make sure the govt. contractors have "diversity" in their workforce (oops, we already have that), then let's make sure the govt. contractors are enviromentally friendly, then let's make sure govt. contractors donate money to the politicians in power (oops, we already have that too), then let's make sure that govt. contractors are family friendly, friendly to christian values, friendly to children, provide health insurance, donate to homeless shelters, provide school mentoring, free breast cancer treatment, sponsor non littering progams, have smokey the bear in front of their offices, have "have a nice day smiley faces" on their stationary, etc.

Several states operate without an income tax. I thought that was clear, but I have overestimated you again.
And as many times as you say it doesn't make anything true...again, give some data on two trillion disappearing out of thin air. I have plenty of resources for the assertion that there's nothing hard about it.
Actually, you're one who's not here to learn or help others learn, you're here to complain.
The things you've asserted have been way out there..."magic", and "trillions vanishing in thin air"...phew! You do know nothing about the nrst, yet you argue like a two year old that you do. Please, save yourself. Stop and learn. There is plenty to be wary of the nrst - you're not even aware of the dangers... you just keep talking about "magic".
Happy FReeping.

Well, maybe "debate" was a poor choice of words...there were those in higher positions who balked at it because of our "multinationalism" but this was quickly exposed as ludicrous.
I think it highlighted the direction our country was heading, and how Sept. 11 stopped us in our tracks.

Thanks!
The rhino is McCain.
I had originally intended to animate the Pelosi monkey, and maybe one day I'll get around to it.

Why would Corporate America be opposed to an increased share of American purchases? Wouldn't that increase their sales over foreign competitors?

I've kinda been wondering that ever since I started reading this thread. Do any of these solutions that we proposed go against the regulations of the WTO and NAFTA? And is there any way around them so we can change our system? I really am curious about this...

On the web you can find the following information at
www.management.about.com/library/weekly/aa060401.htm
"Pay for Performance
According to Business Week, the average CEO of a major corporation made 42 times the average hourly worker's pay in 1980. By 1990 that had almost doubled to 85 times. In 2000, the average CEO salary reached an unbelievable 531 times that of the average hourly worker."
And so shoot me I got dislexic on my 2001 data which looks like I got that wrong by a year also because it was really worse than I stated.

I've given up hope of that. Such bills will make Buchananites (0.5% of the population, tops) and trade unionists happy, raise the costs of goods, and f*** up other sectors of the economy, but they won't bring the jobs back. Doesn't matter though. Just as long as they don't call it "central planning", no one gives a damn.

Once again, instead of fixing the problem, our elected officials make matters worse.Instead of repealing the laws and regulations that make it difficult for US companies to compete on a global scale, they want to make matters worse by passing legislation that will almost certainly result in increased costs of materials purchased by the government and correspondingly higher taxes for us.
The reason that jobs are leaving the US is oppressive US laws, regulations and an abusive tax system that make US companies unable to compete on an equal basis with foreign companies. All that forcing US government departments to buy more products from US companies will do, is drive up costs, since knowing that they don't have to compete, the price of those US products will most certainly be higher. Of course, why should the government worry about paying higher prices? They can always raise taxes to pay the difference.
On the other hand, they could encourage enormous job creation here in the US, by repealing the laws and regulations that punish US companies and replace the income tax with a National Retail Sales Tax. Of course, our elected officials on both sides of the aisle wouldn't do that, because it would mean that there would be no problems left for them to solve.
So alas, once again, it looks like the DC politicos get the gold mine and we, the taxpayers, get the shaft.
How foolish I was to think that having a GOP controlled Congress would make matters better.
