Shrimpers protest free trade agreement with Central American nations

NEW ORLEANS (AP) -- Wearing baseball caps and T-shirts emblazoned with "Save the commercial fishermen," Louisiana shrimpers joined black-clad protesters on Saturday in a march against a free-trade agreement between the United States and five Central American nations.

"Never did I think that I would go this far," said Timothy Danos, a fourth-generation shrimper from Lafitte, carrying a banner as he strode down North Rampart Street on the edge of the French Quarter.

But, in general, the protective system of our day is conservative, while the free trade system is destructive. It breaks up old nationalities and pushes the antagonism of the proletariat and the bourgeoisie to the extreme point. In a word, the free trade system hastens the social revolution.
