RIAA Hit List - The subpoenas are flying, and we're naming names. Are you on the list?

The recording industry has launched a sweeping effort to identify and shut down individual song swappers, making good on recent threats to expand its legal battle against copyright theft.

The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) has now issued more than 911 subpoenas to Internet service providers across the United States, trying to get the names of people still offering music on file-sharing networks such as KaZaA and Grokster.

Today, "Tech Live" brings you the RIAA Hit List, the user names of file traders targeted in the recording industry subpoenas.

Last month, we brought you the story of Jesse Jordan, a 19-year-old college student who became one of the first to be hit with a lawsuit by the RIAA. Jordan settled his case by paying $12,000 to the RIAA.

The following user names were culled from subpoenas filed with the US District Court in Washington, DC. All subpoenas, incidentally, are being served by the Los Angeles law firm of Mitchell Silberberg & Knupp. A total of 253 RIAA subpoenas were listed as of July 22 through the federal court system's paid online database, PACER. The actual subpoenas are available to view online in about half the cases.

The court documents don't show individual users' real names. They do show file-sharing network user names, the user's ISP, the user's IP address, and a sampling of copyright songs the user allegedly made available for download. To date, many ISPs have been contacted, including Pac Bell Internet, SBC, Charter Communications, Comcast, Adelphia, RCN, and Time Warner.

Following is a list of the first user names from our review of the subpoenas.

When I worked in state government, a disgruntled employee got a hold of the office's football betting pool sheets which where run using state computers (a no-no) and handed them over to the local papers. They had their wrists slapped but one of the people involved said that the most embarassing part of the whole affair was having his awful football picks published in the paper. I wonder how embarassing some of these song lists are going to be. I pity the fool who was sharing "You Light Up My Life". :-)

Where does a 19-year-old college student find $12,000 to pay a fine like that? Is this a trust-fund kid?

Hey, he could afford to buy the CD's...let him eat bread and water for stealing the contents thereof.

Warning the following may offend:

I've been to the site. It's not just songs they swap. every kind of sick porn you can think of... from sex with kids to animals. I hope they close it down completely.

Please forgive my ignorance of this whole matter. File swapping? What exactly are they doing? How could music downloaded from your computer begin to compare with a professionally produced CD, even if it is "free"?

Give my ears a break. This is like recording a cassette of your radio program -- cannot compare with the original. And when I find music on the Internet, it's in little short snatches and the audio player has to be constantly "refreshed". Why would anyone bother?

it's just like what we're doing here... except instead of information in word format, it's information in musical, visual, etc. I have friends that have downloaded complete DVD movies off Kazaa.

what kazaa does is "open" your computer to outside users. These outside users will do a search on a song title. Kazaa will them search your puter and others and display a list to the searching user. he/she then selects one (or more) and kazaa then goes to that selected computer and steals the stored data (song, pictures, etc)

It's dangerous to allow them into your puter. They can take screensavers, BMPs, songs, emails, letters, etc.

You can enter "young" and it'll seach all connected computers for kiddie porn. Bad sick stuff

one more thing. The data has to be on your computer for people to take it. I sometimes upload CDs to my puter and listen to them. A Kazaa person could then take that song off my puter. Same with movies and picture, etc.

It's digital. The MP3 format is designed to match or exceed the quality of CDs.
