"The photos, graphically depicting the bodies of two men, appeared likely to inflame the sensibilities of some Iraqis, even those with mixed feelings about the men. The graphic display of the corpses, along with the evidence that they had not been buried immediately after their deaths, runs against a custom held across the Muslim world, where the dead, even enemy dead, are accorded great respect. Hi, Eva . . . What's the url? I'll keep an eye on it.
Also, we can't forget the numerous islamic desecrations of jewish cemetaries around the world, particularly in Jerusalem. I can't find any pics right now, though.
Respect, my eye! How can the nyt be so brazen with its continuing wholesale lying in the wake of the Jayson Blair affair? Do they think no one is watching?

You have to register to read articles on the NYT site. It's a pain, but I finally did it just so I could send this to the Best of the Web.

The New York Times: Haven for Terrorist-loving socialists! ...or 'Haven for Terrorist-loving neo-Stalinists'.
...or 'Haven for Terrorist-loving running dog collectivists'.
...or 'Haven for Terrorist-loving lick-spittle handmaidends to their Soviet over-lords'.
geeze, Rough, I could use some help down here in the language war...

The graphic display of the corpses, along with the evidence that they had not been buried immediately after their deaths, runs against a custom held across the Muslim world, where the dead, even enemy dead, are accorded great respect.Like in Chechyna, and Mogadishu. Riiiight. They NYT is so full of s---. They will say anything to claim Bush did something wrong. Iraqi Muslims are cheering in the streets, and the NYT is worried we might "offend" someone. Stuff like this is why most people in this country have nothing but contempt for the touchy-feely lefties.

The New York Times and most of the other so-called mainstream media outlets kept insisting before the war that Iraq was a predominatly secular society. Now it's a country full of easily inflamed devout Muslims. The New York Times can't seem to make up its mind.

The real proof of that statement would be that the NY Times NOT publish the pictures, for respect for the religion that respects the dead. Right. You can bet their sweet @$$es that those pictures will be front page on the Times. Case closed.

Oh, it's at the Times, thanks! I was looking all over Google for it, lol.

I heard Tom Rose, the editor of the Jerusalem Post, talking about this picture a while ago. It seems it was this guys bad fortune to have been photographed. The Mossad tracked him down and, in the President's words, he has been "otherwise dealt with".

And remember that Fidel Castro got his job through the NYT. How?
Just curious.

"appeared likely to inflame the sensibilities of some Iraqis," What all two of them? More lying liberal media scum doing their part toward the destruction of their country.

a custom held across the Muslim world, where the dead, even enemy dead, are accorded great respect. " This is a load of crap. The old Caliphs used to kill their enemies and wrap them in donkey hides. They would kill them in public in humiliating ways. The custom quoted here never existed in "classical" Islam and probably doesn't today.

Yeah, those Muslims sure showed respect to their "enemy" Daniel Pearl's body after they pornographically videotaped the cutting of his throat.
Muslims lie big time. They will say anything that suits them and are the biggest cry babies of the human race when the shoe is on their foot. (Notice, I didn't say "civilized" human race.)
Most Muslims and their so-called "religion of peace" customs regarding enemies are barbaric and straight out of the 7th Century. Islam needs a Reformation and a giant dose of truth and responsibility for its actions, ASAP, before I will trust it or its followers sense of sportmanship/fair play. Their own belief system allows them to LIE TO, CHEAT, STEAL FROM, RAPE, ENSLAVE, and/or MURDER their enemies--especially Jooos and Western infidels. Ain't nothing about treating enemy bodies with respect. What a bunch of LIARS!

The big problem here is that the NYT is still in business. Companies are sending their advertising dollars to them and there's millions of New Yorkers and others who believe them enough to continue to subscribe.

At the time of the overthrow of Batista (a SOB, but at least OUR SOB!), Castro was praised as "the Robin Hood of the Sierra Maestra mountains (where he, Raul and Che Guevera were holed up between raids on the nearby population centers). The brothers Castro and Guevera were pushed to the American people as "liberators" of Cuba and NOT the communists some more knowledgable sources were calling them.
Once their "revolution" was secure, the brothers Castro admitted that they "had ALWAYS BEEN COMMUNISTS" and that Raul and Guevera had TRAINED IN THE SOVIET UNION!
The not very funny joke to the Cubans who were NOT communists at the time was that "Castro got his job through the New York Times" which SERIOUSLY -- AND INTENTIONALLY -- MISLED Americans about the Castro crew's background and intentions.
Cuba has lived under Castro's iron hand for over 4 decades!
