July 24, 2003 -- City Councilman James Davis was shot to death inside City Hall yesterday - blown away by a political rival he escorted around metal detectors minutes earlier.

Davis, an ex-cop who carried a gun, never got a shot off, but an officer assigned to guard another politician shot and killed Davis' attacker.

Plainclothes cop Richard Burt, a nine-year veteran, opened fire at Askew from the chamber floor, hitting him with four of his five shots...

Good shooting Mr. Burt. Who knows if this wacko would have continued taking people out around him...

Thanks for the photo. The guy's name was sort of a clue.

Good point. You could also sort of determine the race of the shooter by what the media did NOT say in their headlines or lead-ins...

You can also tell that Askew was a democrat (as most murderers are) since if he was a republican the headline would be "Beloved black councilman murdered by REPUBLICAN rival"

Thanks, I didn't want to be cynical, but I agree. And not just about race. Think how long it took them to identify Condit as a "D", and then, only with the preface "conservative". Blech.

Kudos to Officer Burt for his shooting skills.

They had a picture of Askew on the local news in New York last night. It wasn't a great photo -- it was a black & white photo from a campaign leaflet.

I would describe Askew as a light-skinned black man -- in the picture they showed, he sort of looked like a young Harry Belafonte.

Because, as I have said before, Bloomberg is a totalitarian nancy-boy. Plus he's crazy. Things like guns, and beer, and cigarettes, and cars where you sit up front on the left instead of in back on the right, *really* bother him.

It seems to me that he panicked yesterday. They had a whole plan, apparently called Operation Atlas, to secure the city. That's why they closed the bridges and stopped the subways.

That, plus his odd comment about this being an attack on democracy lead me to believe he over reacted.

They wouldn't go to the trouble if *I* were shot.

Elected Officials are Really Important People, you see. An attack on them, even by someone the victim knew and led into City Hall by the hand, is an attack on all of us. It's an attack on democracy itself! It's practically terrorism! We must react in a BIG WAY so the Not-So-Important tier of people understand that fact! Harumph!

Four hits in five shots, shooting up into a balcony in the middle of total chaos.
Give that man a box of cigars.
