WEST MILFORD - A leader of the Million Mom March is coming to town Thursday to speak to parents about the consequences of keeping a gun at home.

Joyce Sooy, joyces3@excelonline.com  president of the Bergen/Passaic chapter of the Million Mom March, will speak on the topic, "Can We Prevent Gun Violence?" at 7:30 p.m. Our Lady Queen of Peace R.C. Church on Union Valley Road.

Sooy led a bus caravan from Bergen County on Mother's Day in 2000 to attend the Million Mom March in Washington, D.C. Thousands of mothers around the nation gathered to call on lawmakers to enact stricter gun laws.

The discussion is co-sponsored by the church and http://www.highlandspeaceaction.org/ Highlands Peace Action, a group of citizens who support grass-roots efforts toward peace.

Joyce Sooy of Emerson was among those taking part in the anti-gun gathering. She said gun control has been an important issue to her ever since her adult son, Eric, killed himself with his brother-in-law's gun while suffering from depression 10 years ago. She said gun control is an important step toward preventing suicide.

"We don't believe him," said Joyce Sooy, a Republican from Emerson Township."Now he's trying to backtrack and appeal to the moderates."

'Round these parts, when the priest gives a sermon about evil guns, the good ole boys toss a handful of spent brass in the plate instead of cash.

ROFL! I'm gonna remember that if I hear a gun-grabbing "sermon". Of course, they'd probably call the cops when they see spent brass in the plate.

I noticed that she is a Republican who voted against Schundler.

Oh boy, I have more disdain for DiFrancesco Republicans than I do fo the McSkeevyites.

If there in any justice in this world, this woman will one day come to the conclusion that the death of her son was her fault. And that her efforts to deprive law abiding Americans the right to protect themselves and their loved ones, only resulted in the deaths of many others.

I hope that it is on her deathbed that she comes to the realization that she was a purveyor of death. Not only of her son, but that of innocent strangers. I wish that her last moments on earth are a realization of all that she is denying now, and of the tragedies created by her, as a result of that denial. That would be justice.

Bump on the West Milford residents packing. Bears and Deer aplenty up there and around Greenwood Lake. If I can recall correctly, the church is across the street from a strip mall. There may still be a pizza place in the strip called: "De Marco's." It was pretty good. If anyone wants to freep them up there, we should all go for pizza afterwards.

That's the right idea! To be a member of any church in any denomination is to suffer occasionally a priest or minister who uses the pulpit as a bully pulpit from which to expound his own (usually asinine) purely political views. I don't get angry anymore; I just throw in the collection basket a note that reads, "I'll start giving money when you stop talking politics and start talking religion".

I bet indulgent paprents, those that keep buying Junior a new BMW every time he wreaks or rolls one until he finally kills himself, account for more teenage deaths than guns.

So you don't think opposing abortion, for example, is one of the responsibilities of a Christian? Politics is the interaction between more than one people or groups. It is PRECISELY an area where religious faith must be put into action. You don't think a priest or minister should talk about that?

"...You and who else."

A lot of us, Catholics also, if Church members don't start protecting our children from pervert homosexual priests.

It's so nice for the good bishop to write so clearly about the need to protect our children. Has he written as eloquently about the need to send homosexual priests (and bishops) to jail for life for physically and sexually abusing children?

Followup question. When are American Catholics going to do something about pedophile homosexual priests? I assume they are ruining (presumably) Catholic children? Why aren't Catholics as pissed about the sorry state of their Church as I am?

Probably because you're a self-righteous, pompous, splinter/beam kind of person :)

What percent of priests would you say abused children? Did you know that it's about 2%, same as the general population? Did you know that the seminaries were cleaned up significantly in the late 80s / early 90s and that almost all the accused priests were from before that time? Did you know that during child abuse hysterias many imagined or maliciously motivated claims of abuse are made? Do you want to throw the unjustly accused into jail for life as well?

According to the actual teaching of the Catholic Church, contrary to what some priests allege, abortion is not an issue about which different Catholics in good conscience can reach different conclusions and all of them be in good standing in the church. Gun control, however, is an issue that Catholics may hold a variety of opinions about and still be in good standing in the Catholic Church. When there is no one, orthodox CatholIC teaching on an issue, the issue is purely political and should not be preached about from the pulpit.
