Signs of the times at Disney World: Mickey Mouse can now sport cornrows, and Minnie can wear hoop earrings.
The Associated Press reports that Walt Disney Co. is liberalizing dress codes for employees at its theme parks, whether or not Walt is turning over in his freezer (yes, we know it's an urban myth).
New park policies allow men to wear braids, just so they're straight, are tied close to the scalp and don't touch the collar.
"It is really becoming a mainstream look," said Melissa Valiquette, manager of Costuming, Cast Image and Appearance at Walt Disney World.
The new rules also allow men more choice of shirts (golf and polo shirts still banned), while letting women wear less-conservative earrings (no bigger than a dime and only one per ear) and more revealing footwear (open toes or heels OK, but hosiery is still required).
The company said it showed photos of various styles to focus groups of visitors and asked them if they would object to seeing park workers looking that way.
"We're not looking to be on the cutting edge, but we want to see what styles are becoming mainstream," Ms. Valiquette said.
The changes are the first since 2000, when men were allowed to grow mustaches, and 1994, when women were permitted to use eye shadow and eyeliner and balding men were allowed to wear toupees.

I remember when Euro Disney opened. The company insisted that all women shave under their arms -- this caused a revolt. I never did find out how that was resolved.

LOL ! I went to the Super WalMart recently to find some footwear for the wet area at Bally's, where I work out. I asked the young girl in the shoe department where they kept their thongs. You should have seen the look I got !!
